Not quite correct...............

Only Laser speed gun detectors are being outlawed. Older models of Snoopers and Road Angels will still be legal to use, as there is an option to disable the laser detector.

I dont think this debate is over yet.

Anyway, even if they are banned, that is my point - by simply selling the i3 as a unit that is "capable" of taking custom points, there is no issue for Garmin. Besides - these lists are free anyway (and not a fiver a month, like Snooper)

are they going to ban the new aa road maps (paper version) that has speed camera locations too??!

thing is, it'spublic knowledge where the camera's are, it's not like they're hidden and we're breakinglaws by finding them.

it'sillegal to pick up laser-gun signals though. however most units now work off gps position og cam's

Since upgrading to 2.6 the unit has locked up about 3 times where as on the older versions did not lock up once. It also could be the fact that my batteries are going a bit low so I will change them and see if that sorts it out.

Has any one else noticed this

I think its important that we don't go off on a tangent - they are NOT talking about banning GPS systems with safety camera locations - FACT.

It is detectors that detect transmissions that they are considering banning.

2.6 does seem to be buggy, mine has crashed twice today since i upgraded it to 2.6, i have now downgraded mine back to version 2.5 once again!

Might just be me but it seemed to be taking longer to work out exactly where i was on the map with 2.6, also when planning a route it seemed to take longer to work it out with 2.6 compared to 2.5

Suggest you try resetting/re-installing the update plus new batteries.
Upgraded mine to 2.6 the day it came out and it's behaved perfectly.
No difference in speed or operating system.

Blackrat62 - I'm sorry - not trying to scaremonger.

All I really wanted to do was point out how much better value a £200 i3 was compared to a £200+ Snooper / Road Angel.

No update charges, and a map too!

The Snoopers may well be hit by the proposed legislation - the one I had could sense laser signals.

No for now i'm sticking with 2.5, it's been perfect again since i downgraded it, no lockups or crashes, like i said the speed difference in the operating system might just have been me, not sure really, but the crashing had only happened since the upgrade to 2.6, and hasn't happened again since going back to 2.5, like gazthomas said there don't really seem much point in the upgrade for uk users anyway. Smile

Agreed. It's not of benefit in the UK. I just like to keep my stuff always up-to-date though hence my reason for installing it and it hasn't "broken" anything so I'm happy enough!

I agree with pauljmuk - the i3 is fantastic value - especially when you compare to plain GPS based detectors.

On the issue of upgrading to 2.6 - Garmin's tech dept advised me to do so when I reported a minor issue with my unit as they said they don't list all the benefits, only the major ones. It is possible that 2.6 has some benefit to all systems despite them not being shown.

The issue I had was losing signal on heavilly tree lined routes - unrelated to any fancy windscreens. With only momentary (unreprted) losses this caused the system to 'recalculate' despite not deviating from the route. This occured in parts of South London, and my route home.

This isn't a major problem as it doesn't get lost.

The i3 is really good. A great buy the small screen works and although there are'nt endless views and functions it's really an effective device. + the speaker is far better than PDA and auto night mode is nice. A few bad points :-

In London I could'nt specify a local e.g. Greenwich, Lewisham,New Cross, BlackHeath. I just wanted to get there so I had no post code. The post code route planner and motorway avoid have been faultless although I would prefer this option further up the menu structure.

No fancy carrying case, CDs, general look and feel is robust but this is no Sony or Apple piece of kit. Could they have made it even flatter so it could fit in your pocket? Also remember to change the default language from US English to UK.

Finally get it installed in Halfords for free I did'nt and regret it.

Nothing else it's worth it. Wink
