Hi,

I’ve been a customer with TOMTOM since the first release of their software. I have kept up with there upgrades and been generally pleased with the software CoPilot

However, I have now hit a roadblock Exclamation Recently my original PDA gave up the ghost so I replaced it with an IPAQ 4700. I sent details to TOMTOM, device code, software registration number and a copy of the IPAQ purchase bill.

So far despite three attempts with the customer service department I have been told that they refuse to issue a new activation code. What really frustrates me is that the correspondence is abrupt and implies that I am in the wrong and attempting to defraud them Angry

I have had the opportunity in dealing with Mapopolis – I use their software for trips in the States. Their customer service is exemplary – swift response (hours) and wanting to help Laughing

Oh well rant over .. now it’s time to send my request via recorded postal delivery to TOMTOM.

So when did you last change your device then? I thought that you could change it every 6 months and the website would issue you with a new activation code after inputing the new device code. It certainly did with TT3.

Hi

Device replaced 2 weeks ago. My previous IPAQ became very tempremental two months ago and required a complete reboot, this required re-activation - which worked fine - hence I've 'used up' my current quota.

While I'm waiting for a TOMTOM response I have been using Mapopolis with some UK demo maps. The interface is not up to the 'eye candy' standards of TOMTOM but the routing is as good and certainly quicker to calculate.

Frustrating.
They probably have some small print in the contract that enables them to get away with this behaviour without falling foul of the trading standards legislation.
That said it might well, if challenged in court, be deemed an unfair contract.
Enough to drive you to buy a hookey version!

After two weeks new activation code supplied. :D

Just takes too long and far too frustrating. Certainly not one of the better companies to deal with.

In the meantime, out of frustration, I’ve worked out ( Idea ) that to bypass the activation is a doodle anyway! Just goes to make the whole TOMTOM process dissapointing.

A few months ago, my iPaq decided to hard reset itself losing everything and despite much trying, I could not get my TT3 to re-install, not the UK nor Europe maps.

Recently having changed to XP, I decided to try again and no problem with the installs. Activation for the UK was fine but now the TTcode web site is down and no way of activating the Europe maps. I guess I will have to wait, or try the phone and take the flak from TT.

A real PITA and unimpressive all round.

I've lost my product code as a result of downloading a new program onto my iPaq - and I can't find the CD case anywhere. How did you manage to bypass the activation if you don't mind my asking? I feel sure there must be a back up of the file with the code in it somewhere in my iPaq docs but I'm darned if I can find it!

All help and/or suggestions VERY gratefully received!

Embarassed

If you registered the product on the TT site it will give you the activation code for your device whenever you ask for it even if you no longer have the product code.

Hi shammy
Never got round to registering your software? Lost your CD case and info? Er! Sounds a little suspicious to me.

I resent that comment Trevor. I have a fully verified registered copy for my iPaq, my other software and my Tomtom kit - I have the original receipts, the original box for all the hardware, but have just mislaid the darned CD case following a download of software from an authorised HP site that caused my PDA to crash bigtime and lose all my Tomtom settings.

One thing I never condone is software piracy - I work in an industry where honesty and integrity is a pre-requisite.

This is a genuine problem - if you are implying otherwise I think you owe me an apology.

:x

My code came on a credit card sized piece of plastic.

Weird - but I deleted the file history in the offending downloaded program and suddenly my Tomtom is back working again.

AND I remembered where I had put the CD case so I also found my codes!

Momentary inspiration for the latter - mysterious intervention for the former.
