hi i recently purchased an acer n35 for myself and took it to florida on holiday loaded with tomtom5 and relevant map, unfortunately i could not get it to work, it stated that it was mot receiving a valid gps signal, i have used the same item and program in the u.k and all is ok, with this being my first gps unit i am hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction as to what the problem may be and how to fix. thanks, Nigel.

How long did you leave it on for? If you had it switched off for the flight, it would be looking for the wrong satellites, and could take quite a while before it realised the problem. I have used four different Satnav receivers on both sides of the Atlantic with no problems.

HI tim, i left the device on for about 30 to 60 mins at least on a few occassions at least and also changed the baud rate to see if that made any difference though i cant remember how long i left it on the other setting.i did not realise it would take too long as it set up originally in a few minutes, how long may it have taken to adjust itself.

The receiver is a reciever, that's all. It doesn't need a change of settings if moved from country to country.

Did it work reliably with TTN5 with UK maps before trying it in Florida? If so, there's no reason that I can think of that it wouldn't work on the other side of the pond.

Just a thought. I've had Copilot tell me there was no GPS signal but GPS viewer showed the data stream coming in. So what I'm saying is that it could have been something to do with TT and maybe not the receiver.

Nigel,

Last time I went I emailed ALK, who told me that I would have to buy the American software so I didn't bother and have no experience of it in USA. Maybe one of our American members would be better recommending. Have you tried the Tom Tom forum to see if anyone can figure out what was happening? or email TT.

I know what you mean about spending a fortune though.
