6021-x6 versus 6010

I have acquired a 6021-x6 and, today, I compared its performance in situ with my 6010. To say it was crap would be an understatement, where the 6010 showed 7 birds the 6021 showed only 2 and sometimes 3. Is this to be expected or is there a fault?
Is there a way of exercising the 6021 from a PC, I have a card reader that takes CF cards but it locks up if I plug in the 6021 - well it was worth a try wasn't it. That is the only CF access I have to the PC and I don't have a PCMCIA adaptor.
As a matter of interest the 6010 is quite happy working to TT5 as a TomTom receiver or a NEMA 4800 device which is useful as there is no need to change the settings if I change the receiver to work remote from the car.
