Hi
Is there a difference between the USA and Europe cig lighter in a car? I would like to use my PDA for navigation when I go to the States soon, but wondered if my European cigar lighter connector would work in the hire car.

No difference.
They are universal and all 12v and centre positive.

There were so called "positive earth" electrical system models in UK some yers ago.
But that was many many years ago and I do not think they now exist, except may be some vintage models.

Nope, defintely a standard in all cars for the past 20yrs at least, 12v center +ve .

Umm.....Dont want to upset anyone, but he socket in a US car, IS a DIFFERENT size to a UK car (And lots of people may not know that the European socket started to change about 4 years ago).....
There's not a lot of difference, and I cant remeber which is bigger/smaller, but we are not talking a huge amount.....only a mm or so, but it can sometimes mean "loose" connection, or the plug may not make a true connection, nothing a few seconds of care cant sort out...... |

WE sell car USB adapters to everywhere/anywhere in the world, including USA, UK, Katmandu, Mauritius and Tahaiti, we have never heard of any incompatibility.

Hi mburton2,
I occasionally have to use a 12v rotating amber beacon on my vehicle. The beacon has a universal cigarette plug adaptor. With the plastic adaptor on the end I can power the beacon from a normal car cigarette socket. When the adaptor is removed, the plug can be used in a 12v vehicular power socket, like the ones found on agricultural tractors etc. The 12v vehicular power socket is slightly different to the normal car cigarette socket.

Indeed they are different....but not THAT different to cause a problem to most users......Just like the US lighter socket is SLIGHTY different in size to European lighter socket....but again, not THAT different to cause a problem for MOST users......
a couple of years back I was using some specialist equipment from the US, in a European car, and had did have SOME problems with loss of power, as the US "plug" was slighty smaller, meaning the connection was not as positive as it should have been.....
Like I said, the difference's are small, and most people will not notice, but the difference IS there....

| I think it depends on the automobile manufacturer. When traveling, i find it useful to have an adapter pack for multiple options. |
