I've resolved this via IM with the OP. My apologies for suggesting it was COM1 for the built-in GPS on the Mio168 when it is of course COM2 or Serial Cable on SP2.

From what I understood from his post, he was suggesting that he was using that setting without any external gps connected, but using that setting for the built in receiver.

you can use either setting on the mio 168 the tomtom gsp or the Other cable NMEA GPS but this one your must set to com 2 and band rate of 4800 were as the tom tom gps sets itself up

Yes, my mistake, I had tried that but got no signal at all, I then soft reset my Mio168 and tried again and it did work as you say, but I see no difference in the number of sat locks or speed to acquire the sats.

Since having no end of problems with locking up and crashing I have ditched my Mio 168 and got a HP Ipaq rz 710 with external gps which appears to find sats quicker and signal appears stronger.
