I've been using TTnv2 for a week now, and am very happy with it. So I'm looking for the next buy

What does Citymaps give me in the UK? Doesn't the standard maps help me navigate from point ot point anyway? Thanks in advance.

Why?

Citymaps should have been your previous buy, not the next one.

For cost reason, I would recommend Citymaps (less than £40 covering the whole Europe and PPC/Palm/Symbian OS).

It does not have "navigation" capabilities such as voice direction, real time recalculation of routes etc as offered by TTN. It does show you where you are and route from A to B.

I agree with Ronald, CityMaps and RoutePlanner are usually the first application people buy before they trade up to Navigator. CityMaps gives you the same maps as Navigator, but you are restricted to a towns boundary. If you want to route between two towns, you can't, you'd have to route from where you are to the town boundary, change map and then plot another map. It doesn't have voice direction, and for most who purchased the original Navman 3000 well over a year ago, this was their first apps as they came as SmartPath Trips and City.

Think of how many town's and cities there are in the UK, now that's how many maps there are that you'd need to route through if you planned routes with CityMaps.

I'd save the money and put it towards a GPS Receiver upgrade, of Pocket PC Upgrade if you're happy with Navigator, if you're not, then I'd go look at CoPilot or Destinator (or SmartST Pro if you have a Navman sleeve).

Yes, I am happy with TTN, especially the 3D graphics and the voice capability.

Thanks

.... just one other thing for clarification. Does the TomTom maps that I've loaded with the software effectively have the same level of detail combined, as the indvidual city maps, at least for the UK. Ie if I've got TTN would it still be usefule to have the City Maps for say London driving, or is it already in TTN? What extra would Citymaps give me?

Thanks in advance.

Yep, identical in detail. The only difference is the Navigator 2 maps will probably be slightly newer.

There would be absolutely no use adding CityMaps. If you zoom into the highest detail with CityMaps, you'll get the same level of detail that TomTom Navigator shows you.

Basically look at CityMaps as being a very cut down version of Navigator. CityMaps is old, it came out in 2001. Granted CityMaps has been updated to 2003, but all it gives you is a cut down version. In CityMaps 2003 they did add a Navigator style screen, but that's about it. It doesn't offer any re-routing abilities, voice navigation. TBH, I'm not sure why TomTom released a 2003 edition. Perhaps they're still finding people not willing to shed out £100+ for Navigator and perhaps they're still selling lots of copies of RoutePlanner and CityMaps.

If you took RoutePlanner (for Major Roads), and CityMaps (for street level detail), and added them together, then add re-routing, voice navigation, poi additions etc, then you'll have Navigator.

By all means take a look at CityMaps, but you'll find absolutely no extra's in CityMaps over Navigator.

The only thing I will add is CityMaps covers Europe, so if you want a detailed City Map of say Belgium, then you can get it cheap by using CityMaps, rather than paying for the Belgium country set on Navigator or the European Maps. But beware, there's absolutely no re-routing or voice navigation.
