Strange this one - just removed TT5 and replaced it with TT3. Now I like TT5 but its too flaky for me to rely on.

Wasn't prompted to reactivate tt3 but went online anyway. Got this message:

"XXXX XXXX XXXX " is a correct product code for TomTom Navigator Great Britain.

This product can no longer be activated.

Note: this product has already been activated.
If your device code is XXXXX XXXXX then click here."

Did the click here business to be given an activation code which I've saved for future reference.

The strange thing is that the software hasn't prompted me for an activation code. It appears to be working okay.

And as an added bonus, I got a sat fix within 15 seconds :D

you haven't changed DeviceIDs, so your previous activation key does technically work. Legally your TTN3 license has expired when you bought the TTN5 upgrade - that's how TomTom sees it.

Thats the way I viewed it as well. As I'm faced with a 700 mile journey next week I'm forced to revert back to tt3. Hopefully the release on Friday will sort a few of the issues out.

Perhaps Tom Tom have realised that too many peeps are unhappy and have tweaked things to allow tt3 to be reinstalled. I would have expected the product not to work rather than operating a technically illegal piece of software.

Here is how TomTom see it when asked the same question.

Dear Mr Print,

The product code for TomTom Navigator 3 does indeed get blocked once the upgrade is purchased. When you upgrade, your old product code is immediately blocked and can no longer be activated. The old product will work on previously installed PDAs but cannot be transferred to new or different devices. No new installations of the old product (Navigator 2 or 3) will be possible. We can therefore not reactivate the old product code if the PDA is replaced before the order is received.

The upgrade period is currently running for 3 months (TomTom reserves the right to change or alter this date). You can still purchase the product within this upgrade period.

If you wish to wait for additional fixes to come out for TomTom Navigator you can do so within this upgrade period.

I hope this answers any questions in regards to the Navigator 5 upgrade.

With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

Clearly from the above, TomTom don't mind you continuing to use TT3 on the device it was originally installed to.
That was the impression I got when talking to TomTom staff at Newport

If you use Sprite Backup Premium and backup everything on the PPC including the SD Card to your PC. File size approx 157 MB. On a hard reset running Sprite Restore on the PC returns the PPC to exactly as it was including the SD card if you re-formated that at the same time, as well as restoring the original Activation Code.
If you run Sprite Backup on the PPC and create a self extracting Backup file on the SD Card, you can re-install when away from home.

I do exactly that. On one storage card I keep TT5 maps and Sprite backup of TT5, and on another card, TT3 maps and Sprite backup of my PDA when I had TT3 (including Checkpoint and UK postcodes). I can switch from one to the other in 2 minutes. I usually revert to TT3 when I need the itinerary function for planning a route offline

On my 2nd SD card I have CoPilot Live 5, so can switch between that and TomTom.
