I have just received my upgrade pack for TTN5 for my XDA II. Should I firstly use the Windows add/remove programs facility to remove all elements of my TTN3 program that are listed and install from scratch or will TTN5 overwrite redundant software? Thank you for any advice.

If I were you I would use Sprite backup to keep a backup of your present configuration and keep it somewhere safe. Then do a hard reset and install TT5 on a clean PDA. If you don't like it you can restore TT3 from the backup you have saved.
In my own case I need the itinerary function, which was better on TT3. For a forthcoming trip to France I shall revert to TT3 for planning journeys. I discussed this with TomTom staff at the Newport meet, and although it's not strictly within the terms of the licence, their view was that it was perfectly legitimate to do this. Although my TT3 activation code is no longer valid, I can get a working version of TT3 using mybacked up files. I shall no longer need this if TomTom fix the itinerary in a forthcoming patch.

Many thanks Robin. I haven't got Sprite backup and am wondering if my Microsoft ActiveSync backup will achieve the same before I try a hard reset? Should I remove the software for my wired Tomtom GPS receiver?

You dont need to uninstall TTN3 to put TTN5 on. The installation handles this and takes forward your home location and a few other settings to TTN5. Make sure you read all the paperwork that comes with the upgrade though - one separate piece describes the need to manually delete the maps from your memory card before you begin, but back up any user POI's that you may have in these folders first so you can copy them back after the install.

Good luck!

The big advantage of Sprite backup (and it costs very little over the internet) is that you can create a self-restoring file and keep it on a storage card. You can then restore independently of any PC
I have a spare CF card with TT3 maps and TT3 backup. I can carry that with me and change to TT3 in about 2 minutes. Although you don't need to do a hard reset before restoring, I have found that if I don't do so the memory used on my PDA is substantially greater. I prefer to give the PDA a spring clean when I install new software!
