Hi all.

About to purchase a Garmin Quest. But I'm scared that I should be going for the Tom Tom Go 300.

All views welcomed. Ultimately, I'm interested in your views whether the Quest, on balance, is as good as the GO 300.

I've both a Quest and a GO 700. They both have their strengths:

Quest
Waterproof - I use it in all weather for motorcycling, cycling and walking
    Long battery life
Small enough for walking - but this can be an issue on screen size in the car although properly mounted you'll be OK
Excellent quality screen and display visable in bright sunlight and with sunglasses (including polarised)
    Suitable for walking off-road
    Supports OS Grid references etc
    Lots of POI entries supplied
PC based planning then transfer to Quest if you want
    Trip computer
    Track logs
    Retrace my route
    All Europe coverage
    Expensive map updates
    Good Support, regular firmware updates

GO
    Good size screen
    3D view - I use 2D however
    Better audio quality
    Traffic Integration (chargeable)
Speed Camera Warnings - FREE if you do it right
Lots and lots of POIs readily availble from many sources, but quality not always as good as Garmin
    Nice user interface
    Support Poor

In summary, they are both very good. For me the GO is best in the Car, but to use it elsewhere then the Quest is the Daddy.

Nice summary, BrummyGit. 8)

When comparing the two, don't forget that the Quest comes with full European maps on CD whereas the base model Go 300 you are looking at only has UK maps as far as I can see.

You can't upgrade the 243 Meg of memory in the Quest (all UK = about 130 Meg) but I think you can in the TTG 300.

If the Speed Camera database is important to you then remember that although you can load it into the Quest, it won't alert you when you approach a speed camera.

The screen on the TTG is much bigger than the Quest and it takes touch screen input. Address input on the Quest can be a bit tedious.

What it will come down to in the end is what sized unit you want and what price you are willing to pay. The Quest is a small portable GPS that will slip in your pocket and the TTG 300 is a larger one more suited to in-car use.

There are other Garmins like the Street Pilot 26xx series and C320 to consider too.

Now you probably have more questions than answers. Confused

Good luck!

I would say, get a Garmin C320. It has a similar screen size to the Go, excellent sound, plus the benefit of 3D Navtech maps(Go 300 use Teleatlas maps). Also, you get the European maps on CD, while the Go 300 is UK only.

The UK maps come on a 256MB SD card, with bigger cards you can have as many maps as you want.

The C320 doesnt support speed cameres database, I dont have a problem with that. Also, it doesnt support PC route planning(not a problem for me) or postcode search(never had trouble finding a road for me).

Personally, I think the screen is too small on the Quest, unless you absolutely have to have a small unit.

I have read on the forums that the Go suffers from issues with losing satellite lock and inacurate maps, so I went for the C320.

There's so much good advice here it must make choosing all the more difficult! :D All this means is that there's a lot of happy customers out there and you'll probably end up being one of them by buying just what you want and not regretting it at all.

I bought a Quest simply because I wanted a unit that would work in a car or on a mountain bike and then slip into my pocket when I came to the end of a journey. It does all three brilliantly. In fact, in many respects its a better performer than the £1500 intergrated Nav I had in a Jaguar.

The small screen has never bothered me. Using RAM mounts in the car (and on the bike) the Quest is mounted in a position easily readable without being a hazard or distraction. In that respect it is also beter than the Jaguar which whilst having a large screen (7") is well out of eye line. In any case, when you're wanting the Quest to navigate I'll guess you'll use the voice feature which is to an acceptable standard with the latest upgrades.

It's a very personal thing. Try writing down in a priority order what you're looking for in terms of feature and performance. Strolling around this sites will give you lots of clues as to what's good at what and what isn't. If audible warning of speed camera locations and large screen is high on your list that should lead you one direction. If you want portability that'll take you another way.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide...
