SmartST V3 install problem

I have a Ipaq3970 with navman 3450 sleeve. Activesync 3.7 & Smartnav V3.
I have loaded Smartnav desktop and sync'd the Ipaq as usual. I launch Smartnav and it prompts to connect to the Ipaq - it says it can't find it - any ideas?
I lost all my V3 software when the battery failed so i am having to reinstall everything from scratch again. i had the same problem before and it was an obvious solution - but can i remember it??! I think i went to the menu on Activsync and selected Add/Remove option but the box appears momentarily then disappears again.
