I have just cancelled my order for MN5

I previous was running MN4 (with TMC) quite sucessfully. The map cost for MN5 version was substantially more than for MN4, but as I noticed that the MN4 maps were becoming increasingly out of day still went for the "upgrade"

Following other threads on this group, I then discoved that the new "upgrade" no longer offers TMC (for the UK), despite the Navigon website not mentioning this, and even selling you a pack with British Maps & TMC receiver!!

Eventually navigon replied and confirmed that MN5 no longer supports TMC for the UK - hence I have cancelled my order.

I am not considering getting shot of the PDA and running TomTom Go.

cancelled my order too.

How long did it take for them to reply?

I am getting shut of Navigon (offers welcome Wink ) as I'm not impressed with the way they hid this information.

I'll be buying either Tomtom or another garmin.

I certainly won't be looking at an update, just have to see what the cross promotion offers on TomTom are like... Most disappointed that there is no TMC :x

And Navigon still have not updated their website.

Indeed they will sell you a package, of MN5 plus a TMC receiver with British Isle only maps (http://www.navigon.com/site/int/en/shop/consumer/pda/195)

This is of little use, as TMC is no supported in the UK - and you cant use overseas because you dont have the maps!

As far as I can see there is no mention whatsoever the TMC is not supported in the British Maps.

In fact the FAQ states:

Quote:

In what countries is TMC reception possible?
The following countries currently offer TMC
Great Britain

I went home to cancel my order only to find that it had arrived!

I've now got both Tomtom V5 and MN5. Oh well. Yesterday I preferred TT5. Today its MN5.

They are both far from perfect. TT5 is certainly a big step backward.

I believe TMC is traffic reporting? (I'm a Yank... I don't think we have traffic feed)

I'm curious how the maps compare between MN5 and TTN5. Looks to me like MN5's are spartan and cheep.

Does the voice command actually work?

Quantum wondered if the Navigon maps were "cheep" - I can report that they are definitely not. Of course the lack of European maps as part of the package is disappointing (but not fatal for me) and the lack of TMC as advertised is a complete disgrace but the MN5 product is a pretty good navigation product.

Likes:
The map shows towns and street names as you go (unlike TomTom) so you get more of a feel for where you are
Maps are nicely up-to-date (M6 Toll, A41 Aston Clinton bypass, etc.)
The current road name is good (shows not only name but location (e.g. M40 Banbury)
The motorway exit signs are really very good (nothing similar in TomTom TBH)
Reroute is fast, so much so that if you aren't paying attention you might not notice you missed your turning and rerouted!
Zoom is smooth
POIs are good and accurate - I especially like the fuel station signs

Dislikes
On-the-go re-route is not (yet) intuitive and no obvious way to say "Avoid M25" for example - not good without the TMC support
On-screen keyboard is too small
Address entry is fiddly as a result of above (but pretty quick however)
Lack of support in the product for user POIs - converting the customer POI from TomTom into Navigon would be a real chore so POIWarner is the way I had to go at additional cost.
I prefer more detail about the GPS when it is locking-on. They can get a bit funny sometimes as we all know and the satellite fix info can be useful in spotting the problems.
Too many screen taps to do stuff, especially not keen on tap-n-hold as this is hard to do when on the move (yes, yes, I know I'm not supposed to fiddle with it on the move but without TMC . . . )

Overall I have to say it is a better product than TT3 in terms of actual navigation and mapping, but the usability is behind. Shame really, as it could have been so good.
And I have had no luck transplanting in bits from MN4 to try and get the TMC alive - I think the problem would be easier if I could get a capture of some of the data from the Triceiver if anyone has some.
Keep on trucking guys!

Rich.
