Did anyone else see Top Gear last night. They had a challenge where all 3 presenters had to drive to a place in Oxford. Richard Hammond used a TomTom Go (along with another GPS unit) to help him.

What happened when he got to Oxford? The TomTom Go tried to take him up one way streets the wrong way, tried to take him up dead ends etc.

Basically it was a bit embarrassing. Again, this highlighted all the mapping errors from Teleatlas.

I saw this item too, however, and to be fair to TT the NavMan also failed spectacularly as well. It doesn't inspire confidence though does it?

Fair point about the other GPS unit having problems as well. I guess this is just another case of digital maps being slightly out of date.

I wondered how much of it was "staged" - i.e. the message wasn't what the TomTom was actually saying at the time, but just messages added for the sound track. The other thing was how much was driver error, i.e. turning right onto wrong road.

The real point being made was that Oxford is unpassable by car. The one-way system changes every ten minutes so nothing can keep pace with it.

I thought it rather amusing that the guy had about five different satnavs on his dash and not one of them could find him a way through.

Oxford is a hellhole as far as cars are concerned. The Oxford Transport Strategy (OTS) that was implemented by the Oxford City Council is a nightmare.

I have heard that pollution in the city centre has actually increased since cars were banned.

I consider myself extremely fortunate that I don’t live too near Oxford. As soon as the OTS was implemented, I found alternative shops that were outside of the ring road. The Oxford Park and Ride scheme charges you for parking and for using the bus.

It’s a real shame as Oxford has had a great link with the motorcar, Morris cars were built in Cowley on the same site that BMW now build the new Mini.

Regards,
