The sound is good, announcements are timely, e.g. two miles down to just ahead etc.

It's the "Just ahead" prompt that annoys me - it tends to get announced when you are about 2 seconds away from the turn and if the previous turn was less than 3/10ths of a mile away then it is the only warning you get of the turn. :x

The 'Just Ahead' often does not give you enough time to make the manoever, particulalry if that's the only announcement that you get.

For example, just before arriving home, I have to turn right at a roundabout then after another 170 yards, turn right into a residential road.

I get the usual countdown to the roundabout, with the instruction to take the 3rd exit, but I then only get the 'Just Ahead' warning for the right turn into the residential road. If I did not know the area and not already slowing down, I would have to brake very hard and move right to be able to make this turn.

If a subsequent turn is within 3/10 mile of a previous turn, it should say,"At roundabout take 3rd exit and then turn right in 200 yards", or something similar.

Higuys, fair point on the just ahead announcements....you're right, when they are close together, they are generally too late if you are already commited.....

melb........I wasn't trying to dismiss anyones problems, just stating that my setup seems to work well......it is my first GPS setup, but I have 20+ years in the mapping/GI industry........I do wonder how many of the problems are platform specific??

cheers

Hi UK Copilot V5 users.

I have been following this thread since I upgraded my version from 4.5 to 5 in March this year. - That is when it became available in Australia. CP5 was released about 12 months after it was in the UK and the USA. I might add many others in Australia were also eagerly awaiting the upgrade, because while CP4.5 worked it's interface wasnt very good, in addition the maps were quite old and dated.

I expected something really good because of the excellent review i read on this site some months before. But I certainly didnt expect a retrograde step!

Everyone (that I have spoken to - anyway) is quite dissapointed. We have very similar problems to those that are being described here and in addition the desktop version supplied is severely broken. ALK's response in Australia is similar to those I read here ie - nothing.

Today I read on this site about a possibility of a CPv6 - yeah right! We might get this in about a year after you do and I can almost be certain it wont be free!

Quite frankly ALK's response to this issue is dreadful if not downright contrary to the spirit of consumer rights issues both here and in the UK.

The claims made on there package and the Hype spouted by their Chairman of the board and founder in the USA is blatanty incorrect.

for further reading on this issue in Australia have a look here

Perhaps if we got together we may sway ALK into action.

Is it true that the reviewer now work for ALK? I think I read this here somewhere but I cant recall for certain.

Cheers

Hmm, maybe a class action type thing? I am not sure if such a thing exists under UK and/or Australian law. Anyone know?

See this thread for the announcement.

Soz for the delay!

AndyRat

Soz, I wasn't trying to imply that new users are stupid. But, that, if its your 1st satnav sytem then you've had nothing to make a comparison with.
I bought my 1st system (having used 1 in a leased van) on a whim & was attracted to it purely by price......
I was lucky, I ended up with a 'Ford Escort'of a product. I bought CoPilot on the back of the 'hype' and ended up with a 'Robin Reliant' with 2 wheels.

I think your 'platform specific' question is being answered as we go along..
check out freds link......

Thanks for joning us mate! & also ta for the link to the OZ forum. I've only got to page 8 so far (I'll check the rest out over the W/E) and
WOW!!!!....interestin stuff.. I get the impression (please correct me if I'm wrong) that in oz CP uses different mapping data provided by 'Sensis' and you are experiencing many of the same probs! If this is the case it says a lot doesn't it....

Are you an Australian TV star?

I emailed navteq and asked them why my current (latest) mapping data as supplied with CP has less detail than the 18 month old data that came with my Medion.
I can post the whole lot if anyone is interested. But, its quite lengthy!
BASICALLY they danced around the issue and reffered me (for some bizzare reason) to the medion website. They made no reference to CP. But I didnt really expect them to as ALK is a direct customer and I am not.

Have a good W/E all. My letter goes off to ALK today.....I'll keep you posted.

It's a pleasure.
Yes, CP5 uses the Sensis maps. It's CP5 that sucks - not the maps. Another very popular nav program in Oz is Navman and it uses the same map data. Needless to say it does not suffer from the faults that CP5 does.

You know it stuck me while reading all these posts that not once have ALK or Mr Burrows even come close to admitting that there might be a problem. For Mr Burrows to say that it works well for him (as he did in his lengthy replies to Ponderous) is just nonsense.

A simple test that would put all this to bed would be for Mr Burrows in the UK or The Counterpart in Australia to join us in a trip around (Sydney in my case) a chosen area. I'd more than willing to give up a day - and I'm at least as busy as you are MR ALK - maybe more so! We could then document the errors and so on together. Once that is out of the way - maybe then ALK could concentrate on turning Copilot into a product that lives up the the hype on it's packaging.

Cheers
