Explain the info in the GPS Log please.

Hi there
My BT338 GPS and Tom-Tom work like a dream. However, I am new to the actual GPS technical side and being of the inquisitive technical type there are things that I would like to know. For instance, when one starts the GPS the PDA may show 2 or 3 greyed out bars. The greyed out bars can be quite high but no Lat/long position comes up. So what has actually happened between the greyed bars and the sudden red bars that bring the PDA to life? The other query is the GPS Log. What actually is it? If I press the Log info I may get the following data. GPS20050503153004-11.pgl. What does it all mean? I have enjoyed reading bits and pieces on the Pocket GPS World Forum and want to know more. Maybe someone can explain please.

The bars are the signals being received by your gps reciever, when grey they show how many different sats its receiving, when red it shows that your system has got enough info for it to make a fix on your current position.

The log file shows different data being received, have a look at these posts:
