I've upgraded from an Ipaq to an XDAIIi with a syson BT GPS. Points to note:-

1. use GPS 2.07 and not 3.07
2. use fast SD Card - made in Japan (Kingston 512Mb Elite Pro)

You should have no problems with it crashing. Mine used to crash all the time but that was down to using a slow SD Card - SanDisk (made in china)

I've got an XDA2 and can report no problems at all. If anything the XDA2i should be even better (faster processor etc). Starting TT automatically starts the BT connection for GPS so no probs there either. As for GPS 3.07 that is working perfectly as well. Having said that this is obviously based on TT3 so I can't really comment on whether or not TT5 will be as reliable!

PostPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2005 11:46 am    Post subject: O2 XDAIIi Running TomTom Nav 3 Lockups/freezing SOLVED!!!!!! Reply with quote

Hi there. I have recently found a way to STOP my O2 XDAIIi from locking up and freezing when running TomTom Navigator 3.

It is all to do with the o2 Active User Interface which is installed when you first turn on your XDAIIi or do a Hard Reset.

I have removed this and my XDAIIi runs a lot smoother now, and I have not experienced any lockups or freezing from TomTom Nav 3. Also you get the clock back on the top right hand corner of the today screen!!! :D

I have written some instructions for you all.....

I was able to remove the o2 Active User Interface by doing the following:

1) Remove "Windows/startup/connection.exe

2) Remove" Windows/fonts/xpdr_02...

3) soft reset

4) use the uninstall from the setting to uninstall the O2 Active UI...

5) Soft reset and there you are.

This will show the clock on the top right corner and make the XDAIIi faster at startup and more stable overall as I noticed.

Or you can do it this way....

1) Remove the "connections" shortcut in the windows/startup folder. You don't need that icon in the tray anyway.

2) Soft reset

4) Unistall - which will fail, but it gets rid of some bits

5) From your PC, using ActiveSync go into the windows folder and delete everything you can in the "Mobile Solutions" folder. (It's under windows)

6) Soft reset. You're clean.

Following these instructions will certainly make your XDAIIi smoother and even a little faster opening/closing applications on the today screen.
I have emailed o2 about this and they say the o2 Active User Interface plugin has a memory leak which can make the XDAIIi "Think" it is out of memory, causeing TomTom to lockup and freeze, which we all know is VERY annoying whislt driving!!!!!

Anyway, I hope this helps some people and makes driving a little less frustrating!!!!

Cheers,
Lydiachris

ps. ANY news on the release date of TomTom Nav 5!?!? I hope TomTom get their act together before the release and dont have the same problems with orders just like Mobile 5 8O

Hi. I emailed o2 for you this morning :D and got this reply...

Thankyou for your email, and sorry for the trouble you have had.

TomTom 3/ XDAIIi should work with the Bluetooth version of this product
well.

There has been an issue with stability on the XDAIIs for which we
recommended doing a corporate install, this may well improve stability
on your XDAIIi as well. (There are currently no new ROM plans for the
XDAIIi).

When doing a hard reset you would need to choose "corporate" and then
enter 0506 as a code and select finish. The GPRS settings would need to
be entered manually and are provided at the bottom of this email.

We are still awaiting TomTom to complete any testing with XDAIIi
(including with TomTom 5), we hope to have feedback from TomTom in the
near future.

Within O2 Data Support TomTom 3 bluetooth version has worked fine with
the xdaIIi.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if further assistance is required,

Regards
Binder

PostPosted: Wed May 11, 2005 11:13 am    Post subject: TomTom Free Of Lock-Ups!!!!!!!!!!!! Reply with quote

Hi,
I have reached a full conclusion and can report success!

Following some extensive testing with various installs and setups I can now finally explain what I think is causing this freeze /lockup.

Its the Phone! of all things!

Here is a summary of the testing setups bearing in mind nothing else was installed on the XDA2i other than default and the tom tom had GB Only Maps.

Active o2 installed (Personal) using 1gb SD card and phone on (FREEZE)
Active o2 not installed (Corporate) 1gb SD Card and Phone on (FREEZE)
Active o2 not installed (Corporate) 512mb SD Card and Phone on (FREEZE)
Active o2 not installed (Corporate) No SD Card, Tomtom using Memory of XDA2i and Phone on (FREEZE)
Active o2 not installed (Corporate) 1gb SD Card and Phone off (OK)
Active o2 not installed (Corporate) 512mb SD Card and Phone off (OK)

Well there you go, with all the setups that froze, the lockup took longer to happen with the smaller SD card, using the 1gb SD card it took approx 5miles of driving whereas the 512mb SD card I managed to drive 20miles.

Today, I drove 149 miles WITHOUT a single lockup using the 1gb SD card, POI installed and other Apps in the background running, all this because the phone was OFF. Wireless On! as I use Bluetooth GPS.

The reason people may be experiencing a lockup when using a Bluetooth Handsfree head set is because the phone is ON! I think anyway! its not becuase of the Bluetooth Headset.

I think the problem lies with the phone changing cells (changing masts) when you drive, thats why the freeze occurs at various points when you drive. I don't think it is nessecarly due to loss of signal as the phone seemed have a signal when I had a lockup. The masts change must be the problem, changing from one mast with a good signal to another with a good signal!

Anyway Yippee I have found out the cause, hope its the same for you guys too.

One point I must add, I found that using the 1gb SD card the XDA2i runs slower and can cause you to experience problems loading the maps or installing tomtom maps onto it without deleting the partnership in ActiveSync. I am downgrading my SD card to my new 512mb card as it runs smoother and seems to cause less problems for Tomtom.

Any one with other suggestions please post, Knowing my luck it will freeze tomorrow with the phone off, I think that 149miles is pretty conclusive though, especial as it froze again when I turned it on again.

Hi there.

My advise would be to wait until Nav 5 is released, I am going to order it as soon as it is released so when I receive it I will post some findings and tell you if it is stable or not.

Regarding the XDAIIi as a phone/PDA I would totally recommend purchaseding one as they are excellent. I owned a Nokia 6600 for 2 years and thought it was good. I then branched out to buy an XDAIIi and I finally realised what I had been missing. Just the sheer combination of being able to do so much on a PDA that you cant on a mobile phone is vast.

Certainly the quality of the XDAIIi is up there with the top notch iPAQs and the addition of Windows Mobile 2003 SE its one of the best phone/PDA money can buy.

All-In-All I do recommend you buying one, maybe wait until I buy Nav 5 and ill tell you about its stability. :D

In the mean time, even IF you have to put up with lock-ups, a pda is much more satisfying to use than a nokia smartphone, I totally recommend it.
Even so now, I do not have many lock-ups, I would say about 1 in about a week with the o2 active guff off the phone (as I described above)
So PLEASE buy an XDAIIi !!!

I hope this has helped, if you have any more questions please fell free to ask.

Cheers.

:D that was a quick reply
the thing is i've never actually seen 1 in person i've only seen the o2 shop plastic 1 :o but as i'm an o2 subscriber i have the option of upgrading now and from the website it certainly looks brilliant
thing is i get more use out of it with the pda and navigation, the phone for me is hardly used ,i'd say i use it more for traffic update than calls

i'll see how things go ,and might take a chance

but i would like to still see how it opperates with you as well if you don't mind ,your other report was well done

thanks again andy

Well as you said, if you are primarily going to use it for navigation then the XDAIIi is a VERY wise choice. PLUS the phone option is there when/if you need it whilst driving. Also another minor point is that as you probably know the XDAIIi has the possibility of 2 Bluetooth COM ports for use with TomTom Bluetooth GPS and a bluetooth hands-free headset. Which I find particually usful and not available on normal phones.

If I were ou I would take the chance especially if its going to cost a fraction fo the price of buying it with a new 12 month contract which I did Evil or Very Mad HA!

Anyway, I'll keep you informed.
Hope it all goes well, and again, if you need any quesions answering I am sure either myself or some moderators will help.
Have fun!!!

Cheers,
LydiaChris

Hi.

Im pleased that you got your XDAIIi.

The answer to you first question is very simple.

Go to start, settings, connections, then 'beam' option, UNTICK the check box to disable the COM port that the XDAIIi uses for the wireless GPS receiver. IF this doesn't work then post again and ill suggest something else.

Regarding the SD Cards, I use (as you can see from my signature) a Kinston 512MB SD Card only because they got such a good review from pocketgps world in their card comparrison review, Have you seen it!?
You can purchase them from amazon.co.uk which is the cheapest place I have found to date...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DK3I4/qid=1116425196/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl/026-0392609-4588438

Hope this helps,
any more questions then ill be pleased to help.
HAVE FUN!!!!!
