Have been looking at the Mio and fancy the PDA/integrated GPS idea. Still hope to get a bit more advice on comparing it to a TomTom Go but thats another post.

Just before I jump on this PDA bandwaggon - what are the pros and cons of getting a better PDA such as a Palm or Ipaq with all the bells and whistles along with a BT GPS reciever & Tom Tom?

This should be better than the Mio but I cant get my head round how it would work in practice.

e.g. Trying to work out how you would power both for in the car or how long either would last without being plugged in. Also all the IPAQ I have ever seen running TomTom had a really crap speakers that I couldn't make out and the screen was only viewable if it was almost directly in front of you. It was also pretty much useless in sun light.

Would this work for walking about (both in town and using memory Maps for the great outdoors) or are they really just for the car?

The GO is a good choice for in-car but if you intend to use your GPS on foot, especially with OS maps, then a PDA based system its the best solution.

The pros are being able to use BlueTooth.. ideal for situations such as a reflective windscreen, you can place the BT receiver anywhere inside the vehicle for optimum reception and for walking on foot... you will get longer life out of your PDA battery.
The cons are having two devices to power in-car but that is discussed below.

You could either get a cigarette adapter and use two separate leads... one for the PDA and one for the BT receiver or use a splitter lead which will power both from one socket. Alternatively if you plan to purchase a mount, get a powered mount which can supply power to a wired receiver should you choose wired instead of BT. The powered mounts also have a amplified speaker which will overcome any 'crap speaker' issues.
All PDA style screens will suffer to some degree with reflections. you can purchase screen protectors that can reduce glare if it is a problem.

Both the integrated and BlueTooth GPS are suitable for the great outdoors.
BlueTooth more so as it will have its own power in the form of internal battery or batteries meaning it will not drain your PDA's battery.

As for battery time... it depends on the device and batteries!
On average expect a PDA to last between 4-6+ hours on a full charge and GPS receivers anything from 6 to 15+ hours.
