Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new BT GPS receiver and want to know which is currently the best Sirf 3 receiver on the market.

The review of the GlobalSat BT338 seems very good but how does it compare to the new Tomtom Mark 2 BT receiver, Leadtec 9553, Holux GPSlim236 and Rikaline GPS6033 (with 32 channels?!). Does anyone have any thoughts on this or can direct me to any reviews of these devices?

Hi Xenon,

We have done some extensive testing on the new TomTom and Fortuna Slim SiRF Star III units and I have to say I was very impressed with both.

Comparing them to their predecessors they certainly are an improvement. Faster TTFF, stronger signal reception and reception under foliage that rivals Xtrac chipset receivers without the lag.

There are more units on the way too, I'm looking forward to seeing the SmartBlue Mini from Sysonchip and the Leadtek 9553 is one of the first GPS units to look sexy/savvy as well as having top performance.

I think you will be pleasantly suprised by any of the units mentioned. SiRF Star III has certainly raised the bar for GPS units. And long may it continue

The Holux 236 is a nice compact GPS which gets a great signal, also the tomtom GPS that is supplied with TomTom 5 is gets a good GPS signal and is not the slowest at TTFF, yeah Sirf III has improved the signal and the reliability of the GPS and allows you to position the GPS receiver in allot of places that you would otherwise thought impossible to get a signal

Thanks for the info. Sounds like there isn't much between them in terms of performance. I guess its matter of personal taste?

The Fortuna Slim supports WAAS/EGNOS (if that's of any importance). The TomTom MkII, Holux 236, and Globalsat BT-338 don't support WAAS/EGNOS.

Here are the sizes of the units in millimeters (from specs):

TomTom MkII: 87,8 x 43 x 15,1
Globalsat BT-338: 72,5 x 40,4 x 23
Fortuna Slim: 74 x 38 x 23
Holux GPSSlim236: 67 x 46,3 x 19

The TomTom or the Holux may be of most convenient size. The TomTom is the slimmest, and the Holux is small overall (more "cubic").

The TomTom and the Globalsat have a "soft power switch" and they turn off automatically (some 20 mins) after loosing Bluetooth signal. The Fortuna and Holux have a traditional On/Off switch. Both solutions are good in different situations.

I haven't seen a decent comparison of the four in terms of sensitivity etc., expect that it's been noted that Globalsat it somewhat more sensitive than TomTom.

Naturally there are other, mainly cosmetic differences.

And then there is the Rikaline GPS-6033, which may have the best LED-logic and has an On/Auto/Off switch, however it's not Sirf Star III.
