Welp, I purchased a new IPAQ H5550 and a Navman 3450. Problem is, MapInstaller/Map Downloader doesn't see my IPAQ device. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

I did the updates, installed ActiveSync 3.8, lastest ROM update and CD's came w/SP2 already loaded. The GPS seems to work, but I cannot verify since I have no maps loaded. I currently do not have a CF card and only a 32mb SD, which I plan to pick some up tommorow. But the application should allow me to see my device, regardless of capacity, right?
I plan to take a trip Friday, hopefully someone can help asap? Maybe give me a call to help troubleshoot? I already tried Navman technical support, TWICE...and they were stumped. The only resolution from them was to purchase a CF card reader/writer and load the maps straight off the reader. Humm...why can't it work properly, argh! |

Oh, and here's a bit more info. Starting the Navman app on my PPC and then running the map downloader displays this on my PC:

So it can see my PDA...weird. |

So what happens when you actually put one of the map CDs into your CD drive bay? _________________ Tim |

It shows the map and I'm able to click on which maps I want. But it still doesn't list any devices. I just tried this on my notebook computer and it's doing the exact same thing. |

First of all you will need to install a Memory card capable of storing maps either into the GPS 3450 CF slot, or into the Ipaq SD memory card slot.
Put the 32Mb Sd card you've got in the Ipaq - The map for Wales & West Midlands is 18.7 Mb so should fit !
You then need the map cd in your CD drive and follow any instructions for registering the maps if this has nto already been done.
You should then be able to click the tab for Pocket PC and select "Storage Card" from the drop down list, then install the map.
If you still can't get the Smart St software to "see" the Ipaq then try this :
1. Take the Ipaq out of the cradle, take the GPS3450 sleeve off and perform a "Soft Reset" ( little recessed button under the bottom right edge that has to be pressed with the stylus ). When the Ipaq has booted back up slide it back into the GPS 3450 sleeve - you should see a brief message on screen saying "Initialising Expansion Pack".
You can then check the GPS3450 sleeve is correctly installed on the Ipaq by clicking Start / Settings / Sytem / Expansion Pack where it should say "Description : Navman GPS"
The soft reset will also have closed the Smart St program if it was still running on the Ipaq.
( Navman Desktop program won't work if Smart ST is still running on the Ipaq as per your second screen shot. Normally when you exit Smart ST on the Ipaq it stays running in the background, and can be closed manually by clicking Start / Settings / System / Memory / Running Programs - click on Smart ST and then "Stop". )
2. Insert the freshly reset Ipaq into the Active Sync cradle - let active sync. fire up and synchronise.
Check that the desktop PC can "see" the Ipaq by clicking My Computer / Mobile Device / My Pocket PC etc.
3. DISABLE any firewall program that is running to ensure this is not the cause of the problem.
4. Start the Navman Desktop Program on your PC and insert the map CD into your CD drive. Follow any instructions for registering and activating the maps if you haven't already done this.
5. You should then be able to click on the "Pocket PC" tab and select "Storage card" from the drop down menu and install map(s) to this location.
6. If it works - GREAT ! - close it down and try again with your firewall software enabled.
7. If it still doesn't work then post another message with details of where it went wrong.

First thing is: you seem to have quite a few programs running while doing an install but maybe that is an unfair assumption based on purely taking screenshots?
If you try a re-install it may be a good idea to turn off other software applications first |
