Hi all,

I have been testing out my PDA over the last couple of days and all seems to be working well :D one question though is that the mph speed on the PDA shows 36mph if my speedo says a constant 40mph, is this discrepincy normal/acceptable?

Thanks,

Lee.

Yes, quite normal. Speedos can read upto 10% over, but not under at all, so manufacturers build in a bit of safety margin to ensure they don't read under. So your 36mph on the GPS would mean that your speedo could legally read upto 39.6mph, or 40mph to the nearest whole number.

Different vehicles give different results as well. Whilst testing on a private road Embarassed my friend and I worked out that his thundercat read an almost constant 10% under, whether at 40 (36), 80 (72) or higher. My CBR was normally about 4mph under the actual speed recorded by the gps.

Navigator 2004 doesn't display speed on a QVGA Pocket PC such as your rz1710 in portrait mode. I believe it does display speed in landscape mode, though I may be misremembering and it only displays speed on a VGA Pocket PC such as an iPAQ hx4700. I've only ever used Navigator 2004 on an hx4700.

TomTom Go 5 software has an option to display your speed - see the Status Bar section of the review. It's likely that this feature will make it into TomTom Navigator 5 on the Pocket PC, and it sounds as if you will get a free upgrade to that software from your Navigator 2004 HP Edition software. (The free upgrade may well exclude new maps, but it's the newer software that you need here).
