tomtom nav 3 and alternate routes

kit: mitac 168 + tomtom nav 3.01

having a wee problem with alternate routes and "unnamed roads"

was testing the alternate routes yesterday, using the "demonstrate route" application, and set it to avoid an A road, this would be a simple task to re-route and it looked like it had.
when it got to a roundabout it said take 2nd exit, but when it got there ttn3 kept going to the 3rd exit and on to the road I set it to avoid.

is that a quirk in TTN3 in demonstration mode and would it have navigated properly if I'd driven the alternate route ?

also, is there an way to set it to avoid unnamed roads or country lanes ?
when I programmed a route it took me a completely different way to what I would normally drive, through single track lanes, if I didn't know any better I would have ended up driving through a very narrow and twisty lane with few passing points

BTW, I'm in the UK using the 16mb maps

I have that problem of TomTom taking me down twisty country lanes, quite often they are no wider than the width of my car! I've not met anyone coming the other way yet, but it could be a problem if they did!

Looking at the map has always revealed that this is the quickest way but I would have rather it took me out of my way and kept me on proper roads.
