Hi,

New to all the sat nav seen, so go gentle on me !! :D :D :D
I'm after a sat nav unit, mainly for the car, but don't want to spend a fortune. The TomTom unit is very appealing, but a bit to much for me to outlay at the moment.
Just had the latest Makro mail come through and they have a Medion sat nav unit on offer starting today (5th Jan), for £199.99 + vat. (see pic below).
Does anyone know where I can find out some more info on this unit, like model number etc. , and if it will run the TomTom software.

Many thanks

Jon.

That device is not a PocketPC in that it runs WinCE and has no PDA functionality much the same as the GO. It's essentially the same hardware as the Navman iCN510 and is manufactured by Mitac.

The Makro version appears to be running Destinator, you can get a feel for that software by reading our review of the Pocket PC version. remember that you cannot change the supplied software as it comes in ROM on these dvices, its is only the maps that reside on the SD card.

Having said all that it's a bargain at £199 +VAT, if you look at the ads on the right of this page you'll see Evesham are selling the same unit with Navigon software for £399.99 although this is better software.

Destinator isn't the best but it's OK. As long as you realise your stuck with the software that comes with it then it's a very good price. I will be reviewing the Evesham / Navigon PND device soon.

Thanks for your help and advice guys.
I looked on the Medion website that you posted and there is no sign of that model on there.
I'm going to go to Makro on Friday to take a closer look at it.
Looking at the pic I posted above, I thought it might be running the windows software, because I thought that was a windows symbol in the top left corner of the display on that unit.

Many thanks again.

Cheers

Jon.

An interesting point about the Windows Flag, certainly the Navigon version which uses the same hardware is WinCE and does not have a PocketPC backend but it's not impossible that this version does!

I'll speak to Medion and see if we can get clarification on this.

Thanks Darren, your help is greatly appreciated.
I also saw in the Sun newspaper yesterday an advert for Staples, that are selling a Mitac Mio 168 for £249.99, and comes with Route 66 gps and a 256mb memory card. Does this sound like a good deal, or can you get it cheaper elsewhere? And is this a good little unit?

Cheers

Jon.

I'd say that looks like a very good deal. Many places sell the Mitac for nearly that without the software or card!

Couldn't see anything on Staple's website though, has anyone else looked?

The Medion is a PND WinCE device, i.e. No PocketPC OS and no access to the undlying OS. The image used in the Makro add may have been a mock-up.

The 168 is a bargain at that price.

I think you'll find there's different Medion hardware being talked about here.

One is a PND (Personal Navigation Device, like TomTom Go and the Navman iCN range), which, though it runs Windows CE, lacks Pocket PC or similar and is effectively dedicated to that software.

The other Medion products are Pocket PC based.

If you can give a Fastlink code for whatever you're talking about at globalpostioningsystems.co.uk, it will help to sort out any confusion.

David, I think that post may have been in response to DabHand16's ?

Well, I went to Makro's and they had sold out, but the chap said they were getting more in next week. He showed me the display one in their cabinet and it was branded Cybercom, but when he switched it on it came up Medion on the screen. Looked quite a smart little unit.
Anyway, me being impatient, stopped at Staples on the way home and bought the last Mitac Mio 168 they had, and he even threw in a pack of screen protectors worth £9.99 for free.
I'm very pleased with it, still playing with it now. :D :D :D

Thanks for all your help advice guys. This really is a very informative and friendly forum.

Cheers

Jon.

I've just received one of these for review. As suspected it is indeed WinCE i.e. not PocketPC and the software is a version of Destinator.

Therefore you cannot install PocketPC software onto it. A nice little unit although time will tell how the software itself performs.

Yes - it was - sorry for any confusion. Having had a thread about the Medion PND, DabHand16 mentioned a supposed bundle with this hardware and TomTom Navigator 3, which doesn't make sense.

My point was that we've had two different hardware platforms talked about in this thread. The Medion PND, notwithstanding the mocked up screen shot shown at the top of the thread, doesn't run Pocket PC, whereas most of the Medion products are Pocket PC based.
