|
|
Hi All
Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere, but I need some advice regrding updates to TomTom 3.
I am using a Mitac Mio 168 with WM2003, together with TTN3. The release I bought was (I believe) 3.0, so I have updated to 3.03 via the TomTom website. Should I also update to v3.07 (both the TomTom Navigator and GPS updates)?
The website says:
"This update should be installed if you have:
a PDA using Windows Mobile™ 2003 Second Edition including HP37xx, HP47xx
(check: Start - Settings - System - About) "
Maybe a silly question, but I don't know if I have WM2003 or WM2003 SE - how do I find out? My "about" screen says I have Version 4.20.0, build 14053).
Cheers & Merry Xmas!

WM2003 or WM2003SE is not relevant - TomTom Navigator 3 does not support landscape mode.
Go ahead and install 3.07 - doesn't hurt. _________________ Lutz

You've got Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) 2003 - not 2003 Second Edition.
On the About screen, 2003SE says clearly "Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition", and is based on (Windows CE) version 4.21, not 4.20.
That said, I endorse Lutz's advice - install 3.07. I think TomTom were attempting to say that they regarded 3.07 as mandatory for users of 2003SE device - but the way they worded it has led many to believe they shouldn't install 3.07 on a non-2003SE Pocket PC. You're not the first person to be concerned about installing 3.07 on a non-2003SE device.
For what it's worth, one of my iPAQs runs 2003, and one runs 2003SE. Both are equally happy on Navigator 3.07.

I'm sure you are right, David and Lutz, in saying that it won't do any harm. But when 3.07 first came out I emailed TomTom support and they specifically told me not to install it in my iPAQ 2210, which has Windows Mobile 2003

You wouldn't like to hear from us that TomTom support don't know what they talk about, right? So we won't say it.
I think they evaluated the functional differences from previous versions like 3.03 (which are virtually non-existent) and concluded that if your current version performs well there is no real need to upgrade.
I would say that TomTom Navigator 3.07 is a harmless install, but you need to be cautious with the TomTom GPS driver 3.07 - here it indeed makes sense to stay on your previous version (hopefully 2.07).
Do a backup of your 2210, then install 3.07, and if it fails, restore the backup. _________________ Lutz

@ Lutz about support.
The reason for Navigator 3.07 was to fix various things for use under Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. However, my experience is that it works fine on Pocket PC 2003.
TomTom apparently believe that 3.07 is fine for other OSes for those with Traffic - the only version of Navigator with Traffic support that's available from the Traffic download part of My TomTom is 3.07T. They're not distributing 3.05T any more (there were a few traffic only tweaks from 3.03T - so there was a 3.04T and a 3.05T).
