Well after receiving the Globalsat BU-303 USB GPS for laptop use, I have had the problem that the unit seems to send feedback for a few minutes (to the "GPS Information" software that came with it for configuration as well as testing feedback) and then just stops and says that the device has stopped communicating and has probably been unplugged.

I checked all settings and installed the prolific drivers for a virtual com port (as it is USB based GPS and communicates through com port protocols). Baud rate within GPS config is set to 4800 as recommended but I later noticed that in device manager the port was set to 9600, so just now I changed it to 4800 and am testing the unit for any lock ups etc. Seems ok so far as it is logging feedback as I type but I'm wondering.. how much difference does it make if you set the navigation software to one baud rate (4800) and windows device manager has it set to 9600? Could this be causing lock ups in communication?

Also, is it true that some devices require a signal to send feedback as it seems my unit sends feedback (as it should I believe) even when there is no signal.

I found out these devices have batteries inside and I imagine this is for the device to remember the settings you left it at i.e. power saving, waas and vtg. I fiddled with this quite a bit when I didn't understand what it was about and I might have overloaded it with commands? don't know..

Mainly please let me know if baud settings should be the same in both device manager and in the navigation program and if it would make a difference if they were not the same i.e. crashes.

Most of the devices nowadays are autosensing, and can adjust to whatever you specify. But still - for a wired receiver 4800 seems to be a slightly better setting than any other (for BT receivers it's 38400)

The settings in the Device Manager are defaults. Almost every application asks you to choose your own port settings, which the application will use instead of those in the Device Manager.
