I understand how to create a POI file for my TTG 520 but I noitice that some of your POIs have phone numbers etc that appear on the tomtom screen when you select them.
How do you add this detail? |

If you are creating the file on the PC you add the 'greater than' symbol (Shift + Full Stop) at the end of the Name Text followed by the phone number.
Latitude, Longtitude, "Namegreater than symbol01234123456"
Instead of the leading 0 you can use the international dialling code, ie. 441234123456 for the UK.
If you were creating the POI File on the TT you are given the opportunity to add a phone number after you have entered the Name. _________________ Richard

|
|
I have created a new ov2 file of campsite locations in Europe using PoiEdit Dnote software.
I can add these easily to my own TT device, however, I want to send the file to some friends.
If I try to simply send the file, the suffix ov2 is not recognised by the recipient computer.
I converted the file to a zip file using WinRar and that transmits via email successfully but when one tries to open it and put it on to a TT device, it goes on as a full un-extracted file folder.
To extract the file seems to need the PoiEdit programme.
How can the exercise be accomplished. I've got to the stage of a total mind block. Suggestions?
Having read the comprehensive, guide, above I think I may have to create the file as an ASCI file and follow your guide. Help P L E A S E

OK. Re-read the problem and looked at the files.
Nothing wrong with the files as far as i can see..

The OV2 suffix doesn't need to be recognised. This is common and usually occurs when people double click the files expecting them to do something. The files are just data and should be transferred to the TomTom without any problems.

They need to unzip the file to the PC and then transfer the OV2 file. Don't unzip the file directly to the TomTom. |

Many thanks, Paul...seems I was expecting something to happen that doesn't. Will try sending the file to one recepient and if he manages to install it, I can then send to the rest. Vewry helpful

To complete the picture...
Each file extension has an association depending on which software is loaded on a PC.
For example on PC1 DOC might be associated with Microsoft Word and ZIP might be associated with WinZip. On PC 2 DOC might be associated with Open Office Writer and ZIP with 7-ZIP.
When you double click on those files (i.e. resume.doc or archive.zip) Windows checks to see which program is associated with that file type and then opens it and hands the file to it. However some file extensions aren't commonly used such as OV2, so unless you have some sort of OV2 editing software on your PC double clicking an OV2 file will lead to the message that it's not a recognised type. However that doesn't stop the person copying the file to their TomTom and using it as the TomTom does recognise OV2 files.
With the ZIP files, as there are folders inside the ZIP file these will be extracted when the ZIP file is Extracted. You don't need the folders on the TomTom so it's much easier to extract the lot to your PC and then just copy the OV2 files. |

That has certainly explained it very clearly. I did know most of it but not in such concise terms. I'm sure many others will benefit from your knowledge.
Files now sent with instructions. I await their reactions. Thanks again.

One very simple way to send the file is just re-name it.
campsite.ov2
(re-name it):
campsite.txt
Just get them to re-name it back, done. |

Should the POI be positioned on the shop/POI building or at the entrance to the car park? |

Entrance to the car park, or the street at the front of the shop etc.
it has to be at a place where you can actually drive a car.
For supermarkets for example the poi is placed at the junction with the main road and car park. Sometimes they can be quite a way from the actual store, depends on the lay out.
