Without testing the setup myself, it's difficult to comment, but I'd hazard a guess the problem is with the Axim and not the BT GPS, so you'll probably have the problem no matter which GPS you use.

Though, of course, changing to a wired GPS would probably help if the problem was with the Axim's Bluetooth.

This has become quite an interesting thread, and it has been useful.

I'll now "retire" from this thread until and unless I get something positive from Dell that I can pass on about the loss of gps function. Before I do, retire, though, I would like to respond to Dave's point about getting what we pay for.

I had been prepared to pay more. However, Dell offering a specification that was difficult to match, and in particular in the BT department. In any case, Dell do not sell their products on the basis that one cannot expect them to function properly; indeed, they suggest quite the opposite.

Therefore, I am a little surprised to see Dave apparently implying, if perhaps tongue-in-cheek, that marketing a defective product and not acting to remedy it very promptly might somehow be excused.

Ponderous, good luck and I'll keep my ears open too...

Just an update, I think I may have a little clue as to why the receiver and handheld drops the BT connection. It turns out the range of my handheld to my receiver is about less than 1.5 feet.

I charged both the receiver and handheld fully. I opened up the connection strength bar on my handheld in BT Manager, kept my receiver on my kitchen table, and steadily moved the handheld from the receiver. As I moved to about 1.5 feet to 2 feet from the receiver, the connection bar would fall on the very weak signal side.

Also, the strength also varied where the handheld was held in orientation to the receiver. For example, if I moved 1.5 feet east of the receiver, the strength was better than that achieved by moving 1.5 feet west of the receiver.

Now the question I'm wodering: is this normal to have a range of only about 2 feet for optimum BT signaling? I thought the range was closer to 10 feet.

Standard BT range is actually 10 metres (30 feet). Maybe the antenna on your Axim or BT receiver is mis-tuned.

On my old iPAQ 3970 I could actually set the output power in three levels. I've set it to "lowest" because it still gave me ample range and I wouldn't want other devices to discover the PDA unnecessarily.
