Navigation programs use speed ranges, not speed limits. Obviously one would hope that the upper range is the same as the limit...

Anyhow, not many programs expose this data. I know only of one Pocket PC navigation program doing this, and that is Mapopolis.

Hello and Welcome!

It has been considered, but there are a couple of problems with trying to do road speeds using GPS. which would have to be overcome first.

The first is that you would need a database of every road and speed limit. This would be a mammouth task and I doubt that it would be commercially viable for a private company to do this.

Secondly, the database would have to be kept up to date. This is much harder than it sounds as speed limits are changed all the time. Permanent changes have to be advertised in The Gazette but I don't think temporary ones (like road works) do. You would also have to have routine updated loaded into your GPS system. If you didn't update it then you could get wrong information.

Thirdly, it is unavoidable that errors would creep into the database and cause confusion. It wouldn't be a defense in court to say that your GPS system told you that it was a 60 limit when it was actually 40.

Fourthly, the GPS fix and mapping is not 100% accurate. You could be driving on a small country road with 40 limit and the GPS may decide to position you on a nearby motorway with a 70 limit.

That is not to say that it won't be done at some time in the future. With the government looking into road pricing using GPS for tracking and improvements to the accuracy of the GPS system it may happen in 4 or 5 years time. For now, we have to keep an eye out for the speed limit signs. 8O
