Does Kane Car Pilot use its own hardware and secondly is it compatible with any other software if so what?

Which Kane ?

If you don't already know about Kane, they're a re-badger. Previous versions of Kane have used an Emtac BT GPS with Destinator 2 software.

Now Kane have jumped ship and gone with Marcopolo which is a re-badge of Navigon.

In both instances you should be able to use other hardware (although I haven't tested it myself).

Hopefully you meant other software?

I did knwo the software they used was destinator (I have and am currently running version 2) But wanted to maybe try to run something like tomtom software with my kane hardware?

PS My GPS receiver is a mouse type one not on the sleeve if that helps?

Hi CK,

Am I right in thinking that the hardware you have with your Kane system is an iPAQ plus an EMTAC Bluetooth GPS receiver?

If your answer is yes let us know what model the iPAQ is and I (or someone else) can suggest alternative navigation software.

However, have you considered spending £120 with Kane and getting the upgrade to the Navigon system they are now offering. It looks very good on paper but I haven't used it and can't find any independent reviews yet. Wish Dave would try it because his reviews are P.D.G.

The RoyalTek (wired) receivers and EMTAC (Bluetooth) receivers should both work with TomTom as you can select a whole host of different receivers either named, or by protocol and baud rate, it really depends on the software that you are interested in. Check with the supplier what setting options are available for the software that you want to use i.e. can you choose protocols (SiRF/NMEA)? Can you set different baud rates?
RoyalTek receivers supplied with the Kane Car Pilot were mostly, if not all configured to SiRF protocol, the baud rate is 38400. EMTACs were both SiRF and NMEA, the baud rate for SiRF configured receivers was set to 38400 and the NMEA configured receivers were set to 57600.
