newbie question about Garmin Legend & Mapsource

Just received a new Garmin etrex legend as a b-day gift. This thing is pretty sweet! I am looking at buying the mapsource metroguide since the base map is not very detailed. I have found version 6 for around $90. What I am wondering is: how often does Garmin update the actual "map"? In other words why should I not buy version 4 or 5 off eBay for ~$50 and update the software on the Garmin site to the current version? I assume the software updates would fix everything except the actual map?

From past experience, Garmin offers one new map release per year. It depends what you mean when you say that the software updates would fix everything except the actual map. Some attributes of the roads only come with new map updates, so the software would not fix these. e.g. One way roads, restricted junctions, etc..

I would suggest buying the lates maps as if you don't then you'll not be doing the device justice.
