I will soon release a application that will adjust the backlight brightness,
depending on the sunrise/sunset at a specific location.
This utility is most useful especially when the device is mounted in the car
for navigation, handsfree etc.
When its getting dark, the brightness is automatically decreasing gradually,
and increasing when its getting lighter.
this will enhance the security wile driving, because you will not be
distracted by the bright backlight, and you don't have to fiddle with the
backlight adjustments while driving!
The application will be available in English and Swedish languages.
The application have so far been tested on Compaq iPaq 3870, 3970, 5450 and Qtek 2020.
I am interested in getting suggestions and comments for this application!

You may want to think about an alternative approach. Most of the times lighting conditions change frequently, you may have dark days, and you may have well lit car cabins at night (just to make the point). Of course the ideal solution would be to use the built in ambient light sensors of the old iPAQs...
Maybe it's more helpful to be able to toggle the brightness between a number of settings (two to five) with the press of an assignable hardware button? _________________ Lutz

There will be varying light conditions, but the application would adjust the backlight just fine for an average light condition according to the sunrise / sunset, and changing the adjustment is very easy. The application runs in the background, and the settings is accessible from the tray menu on the Today screen.
Often when I drive home from work, the backlight adjustment is already at its darkest setting(!). But when driving through the town there is quite much light from the streets. Its not a problem though, the sceen is fully readable, even if its a little dark. Better a little bit dark then being blended and distracted by the screen!
The problem with the automatic backlight adjustment on the iPaq is that it works only when battery powered! Would have been useful if it worked on AC power..
The application will soon be finished. I'll let you know, and maybe you could review it?
