TomTom Navigator (BT) and iPaq H6315

Hi, everyone -- I'm a brand-new TomTom Navigator (2 -- the latest for the US) user, and I can't seem to get it to work with my iPaq H6315.

I don't have any problem installing or running the software, and I can pair the TomTom Bluetooth receiver with the iPaq. It creates a serial connection, as expected, and hooks it up to COM4:. I can connect to it, and the TomTom Receiver clearly indicates, with a steady blue light, that a connection has been established.

However, when I try to actually use the GPS, it doesn't ever communicate (no GPS time, no 'dots', nothing). I've ensured that the right GPS Unit (TomTom Wireless GPS) is used, and the right port is selected (Bluetooth Serial Port COM4:). The box next to the boxes is checked. I've tried both settings below -- the "zzzz" and the "tomtom hands" -- whatever those are -- with no luck. (After a few minutes, the BT connection terminates and goes back to a blinking light.)

I've tried resetting the PPC, installing to internal memory, the iPAQ File Store and a memory card, with no difference.

The iPAQ's bluetooth subsystem is working, and I've successfully used it to connect to a headset, Bluetooth keyboard (ThinkOutside) and other devices (computers, BT access point).

There's not a lot to configure on the TomTom devices, or the software, so I'm at a bit of a loss at this point. I saw ONE message up on usenet/news that had a user who's having trouble with their H6315 but also indicated success with TomTom Navigator -- unfortunately, they didn't give an email address, so I have no way of getting in touch.

Any ideas or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

You need to use the outgoing port on the 6315 , and that's COM7:

WARNING: Do not install any GPS driver above 2.07 !

Thanks very much for the reply. Unfortunately, COM7: isn't available in the list presented to me in the drop-down. Only COM4.

You've also indicated that I shouldn't use a "later" driver version than 2.07. But the unit I just took delivery of didn't give me any choice: all I had available was software version 2.24.4 (I'm not sure what driver, but it's the latest, whatever that is).

Is there a place to get the earlier driver, or a way to get COM7: to appear in the list?

you can get version 2.07 of the GPS driver (note this is different from the program version which should be 2.24) from our downloads page.

You can see the GPS driver version in the gps applet, on one of the tabs.

Perfect, Lutz -- you've been really helpful. I've downloaded 2.07 of the driver (the TomTom shipped with 2.09) and, after fussing with ActiveSync a bit to ensure the right driver got installed, finally got it on the Pocket PC.

Indeed, the other Bluetooth Serial Port showed up (Yay!), and after selecting it, everything worked as expected.

Thanks for such accurate and rapid information -- much appreciated! I'll cross-post this thread to HowardForums, where a number of H6315 owners hang out. In addition, I'll let TomTom's technical support, who didn't seem to know how to fix this, know the solution.

Alas, with this CPU... Sad

Frankly, I'd much rather see them stabilize the unit and get the GPRS TCP/IP stack fixed. We can worry about Skype once the basic functionality works! :D

Sure. I've found that trying to send mail over about 6K or so (try attaching a picture), or posting a web form over about the same limit, causes problems with GPRS, but not with WiFi.

With GPRS, you'll typically get a "site not found" error for web pages, and a failed send with mail.

Switch to WiFi, same exact page (etc), and it works great.

I've also found that the GPRS connection gets dropped and often dies, requiring a soft reset, when you try to tether to a laptop and use the connection actively.

Many others on HowardForums are having similar problems...

GPRS seems to work fine *down*, though -- I can retrieve mail all day, and fetch web pages too. Up, though... much less reliable.

Have you changed the APN from the default setting wap.voicestream.com to the (better) setting internet2.voicestream.com?

Actually, T-Mobile just released a patch for exactly this problem -- it was, as I guessed, a problem in the GPRS TCP/IP stack.

I'm very interested in the bluetooth driver download, unfortunately I won't be able to try it until tomorrow.

Assuming/hoping that this works, I also have a Parrot BT handsfree kit in my car. I have already had my IPAQ 6365 working both handsfree and audio.

Should it be possible for the IPAQ to communicate with a BT GPS receiver at the same time as the BT handsfree kit in the car?

Could I then try TomTom traffic via GPRS for a fully converged solution? or should I find simpler and less time consuming ways of inflicting pain upon myself? 8O
