Hi Guys,

I recently bought a cf Que 1620 device for my Dell Axim X5. It's a great little piece of hardware but I've run into a bit of a problem on the software side of things. Mapsource is bundled with the 1620 but its coverage of the Republic Of Ireland is dreadful. To counter this I have tried a few different applications - Mapopolis, Destinator - but none of them seem to support Compact Flash devices, at least the only option I can see is for COM port access in the settings. Is there a specific 'Generic Driver' for the 1620 that I need to install in order for these applications to recognoise my device?

Mant thanks in advance!

Hi Paul and welcome!

Sorry I can't answer the cf Que question, but just wondering if you have the latest Mapsource maps? They should be version 6, if you have an older version then there is a free upgrade, check out Garmin's website.

I agree that the Ireland coverage is woeful, the problem is that all GPS street mapping applications use geodata from either Navteq (Garmin, CoPilot) or TeleAtlas (TomTom).

I think Navteq have the lead (at the present time) as far as Ireland coverage goes, if you have City Select v6 then this is probably as good as it gets at the moment. Sad

Small comfort, but coverage of Belfast and Dublin is pretty much 100%.

Hiya Skippy,

Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I have the latest version of CityMaps - pretty much everything outside of Dublin is just a blank space, terrible!

The more worrying aspect of all this is the apparent lack of support for 3rd party software packages using the 1620 - I can't believe that Garmin would make such a shameful feature where as one can only use their proprietary product?

I've emailed their support but I've yet to hear anything back. I'll keep the forum posted of any developments.

Thanks again!
