Newbie question. Purchased a wired TomTom 3 kit today. Installation of the software seemed a breeze! Everything OK there. Connected up the cables in the car to the XDA II and the TomTom receiver and was met by the stubborn messages 'GPS disabled' and 'Unable to launch GPS control panel' The little light on the TomTom receiver wasn't lighting up. Does that suggest that the receiver is faulty or does it simply mean that it has not connected to a signal? Appreciate that the instructions told me to wait up to 40 minutes for a fix. Am I being impatient?
Many thanks for any advice in advance

something may be wrong with your GPS driver. Do a soft reset, Remove the TomTom GPS driver that came with the CD and install the TomTom GPS driver 2.07 from our downloads area.

Thank you very much Lutz. I have powered up all the connections in the car for over an hour now. Get an intermittant flashing light from the TomTom receiver but still the same, old tired message 'GPS disabled'. 'Cannot launch GPS control panel'. Could you or anyone advise where I recognise the TomTom driver to remove from my PDA? So many file names. I really am a total beginner. Once I can remove it and download the revised driver you recommend. Where should I install it?
Thank you again. Shouldn't have to return the whole package to the supplier I guess. Have saved up for it for a long time!

- do a soft reset
- go to Start > Settings >System > Remove Programs
- remove the ones that say TomTom GPS or TomTom ~ GPS (you may have to do it twice. Do a soft reset and see if they are still there)
- download the version 2.07 from our downloads page and install it.
- do a soft reset
- go to Start >Settings > System > GPS
- on the GPS tab, select NMEA 4800 and COM1: , then enable the GPS.
- go to the first tab and see if the black dots are wandering.

Appreciated Lutz - thank you.

All I have on my 'Remove Programs' list is 'Great Britain Navigator Map', 'TomTom Wizard' ; 'TomTom Navigator' ; 'V2R O2ActiveUI' ; O2 xmail from O2' and 'Microsoft Messenger update' No TomTom GPS programs. Should I remove TomTom Navigator and start from the beginning?

Thanks again.

No, but you should remove the TomTom Wizard. then do a soft reset and check if there are any other things looking like GPS.

Keep the TomTom Navigator , the maps, and the Voice files. No need to touch those.

Many thanks Lutz and johnboy290. Got up early to tackle the problem again. This is what I did (contents of my email to Global Positioning Systems) who are also being helpful.

This is what I have done.

1. I checked inside the XDA II's system folder but there was no icon that said GPS

2. Thinking therefore the program had not installed correctly, I performed a HARD reset on the PDA to bring it back to factory settings and no other 3rd party software on it (there wasn't any other software on it anyway!)

3. I then re-installed the program from the CD. The selection to be installed was TT Navigator English, English Voice Prompts, TT Wizard and TT GPS.

4. The program said it had installed correctly.

5. I then added the UK maps to the SD card on the PDA.

6. The final announcement was that TomTom was now ready for use.

7. I transferred the PDA to the car and connected up the power lead and the receiver lead.

8. I can confirm that there was a flashing green light on the receiver.

9. I opened up TomTom and followed the procedures for choosing unit of measurement and selected the correct receiver from the two pictures that were shown.

10. Then :-( the usual messages:

'GPS disabled'
'Unable to launch GPS control panel'

11. I left the unit on for an hour in the car to see if there was going to be any acquisition of a signal, but nothing.

12. I checked inside the PDA's system folder, and yet again there was no icon for GPS. Maybe this is the root cause of the problem? TomTom GPS didn't install it and therefore it couldn't be launched?

13. I ensured beforehand that 'Receive all incoming beams' was unchecked in the PDA's system folder.

14. The XDA II has never been a problem and has always functioned for the basic uses I put it to.

I can't think what else to do.

Many thanks johnboy290. Appreciate the quick response.

'When you are in TTN, can you see any activity going on between the GPS and TTN? Again, use "File, GPS status" '

Wish I could use this file. Just keep getting the messages 'GPS disabled' and 'Unable to launch GPS control panel' The file doesn't even exist in my PDA system folder despite a hard reset and reinstallation. I may have got some faulty software.

Thanks again.

Please go to Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs and list the names of the programs you see there.

From your procedure I take you still haven't installed the 2.07 GPS driver. Until you do that you will continue to have problems.

Thank you very much for your patience Lutz. You are right, I haven't tried the new driver yet. Guess I was placing too much faith in the TomTom CD.

On my add/remove programs list I have:
Great Britain Navigator Map
TomTom Wizard TomTom Navigator Voice
TomTom Navigator
V2R O2Active UI
O2 Xmail from O2
Microsoft Messenger Update.

Which ones should I remove?

Best wishes

remove the TomTom Wizard. Do a soft reset. Verify that it's really gone. There may be a TomTom~GPS after the first time. Remove that as well.

And now for something completely different - You did do the latest ROM upgrade on your XDA II, did you???

Sad No I didn't upgrade the ROM. Was probably happy with what I had on the XDA II and didn't want to get into a frustrating mess like I am now. probably means that TT 3 won't work with the old ROM? Oh my - I am a retired teacher but your patience excels.

Reckon I should still start removing Lutz?

Thank you.

yes, let's try with 2.07 first and think about the ROM upgrade later.

Thanks Lutz,
Only just managed to get back on the PC after massive thunderstorm. OK TomTom Wizard has been removed. Only TT items left are Navigator and Navigator Voice. There was no sign of TT GPS. What should I do next please?

Have now downloaded GPS Driver 2.07 onto my PC. Do I just drag it into 'Program Files' on my PDA?
