Hi,

I posted a similar question to the "beginners" forum regarding 3rd party software for mapping routes offline. I was just wondering what the opinion is regarding Garmin software options.

I purchased an extrex Summit (no complaints, very happy). What I would like to do is plot routes offline and upload them to the Summit. I know this possibility exists.

For mountain routes I need detailed maps with topographic info (contours, terrain features, etc like you have on UK Ordenance Survey maps). From what I've read and seen in screenshots the Garmin map software doesn't seem to offer that level of detail. They appear to be more metro/road maps.

Can anybody clarify for me if the Garmin maps offer detailed terrain info? Or maybe there is an alternative 3rd party option?

Many Thanks from Spain.

No, they don't offer any topological maps of Europe, though they do have topo maps of the USA.

The best thing to do is get something like Fugawi or GPSMapEdit http://www.geopainting.com/en/ on your PC, scan and calibrate the maps you want to use. Then plan and plot your route using the PC and upload it to your GPS.

You can also use the paper map to check co-ordinates and set waypoints on your GPS.

Good luck! Thumbs Up
