TomTom sneak out the TomTom HP Navigation Pack

Hi all
I recently purchased the hp ipaq rz1710 and tom tom navigator bundle (on offer on BT`s website - £230 delivered).
I have never owned a GPS system before (have seen tom tom3 before though).
Some thinks to share with you
App version 4.400 (2850)
great-britian-map v390
I HAVE installed checkPOInt 3.2.0.0
I have downloaded many overlays including traffic cameras (around 38 different types!),hotels and restaurants, leisure, services, shops (icluding supermarkets like tesco and asda etc) and transportation. This is very easy to do from the synchronize menu in checkPOInt (when attached to your PC). You have the ability to add audio warning to each POI too (a cow sound for mcdonalds is good!). I have used it for about a week now (travelling round carlisle,kendal,barrow-in-furness and the lakes) and its been 100% spot on. always have between 7 and 10 sats fixed on me.
IMHO this is a cracking little piece of kit and for the money I`m well chuffed. Don`t really know what more you get on tomtom 3 (apart from the preview route option) but I can get from a to b very, very easily with this set up.
I transferred all the info from the supllied 128mb tomtom navigator card to a 256mb one (an old one from my camera) and it works fine and gives me loads more space to add stuff (as well as leaving my original sd card safe just in case anything goes belly-up!).

But you can only use CheckPOint to download POI's....

And not use the build-in POI-warning...???

Here in Norway the TomTom HP-Nav Pack also come with the "sneak" now...!

Cunning_Runt,

Having read through a number of the forums and reviews, it appears that TomTom's map data is a little questionable (read - out of date).

I'm based in the South West and often have to travel around Bristol, the Midlands & around London to get to various meetings.

Before making a decision, and with you being an owner of Navigator v4, I'd be grateful if you could help with a few questions that I have:

* Can you tell me whether the A4174 (Bristol Ring Road) is continuous between the M32 Junction 1 and the A4 (near a town called Keynsham)? Check out
this link to see what I mean.
* Does it show you the speed at which you're travelling?
* Does it illustrate the congestion charging zone and M6 toll road?

Confused

Maybe i can answer the questions, the A4174 stops at the A38 at Filton, & in the other direction joins A4 at Hicks Gate Roundabout.

My PDA does show the M6 Toll, as i downloaded these from internet.

I have the HP iPAQ rz1700 with Navigator ver4.40 pack.

Just a note:- be aware that this product has issues with POIWarner ver2, it actually works very well if you donot make a wrong turn, then if Navigator recalculates route too many times, it eats the memory, then dies. Soft reboot required, as i travel the whole length of UK, cannot use it.

Apologies if this comes across as a grilling, but I've got some more questions that I'd like to ask:

* When I've read through the comments on this forum, there's a lot against v4. But, not that many supporting it. Are you able (or prepared) to summarise why you like it?

* There seems to be some confusion around whether the speed at which you're travelling is indicated in portrait mode. Can you confirm whether it is, or not?

* When considering the unit to get, the tick-list for me is on the basis of the following:

* Easy of use
* Functionality (this includes a re-route and avoid traffic jam/blackspot)
* Total cost

Can you advise whether I'm missing anything?

Finally, can you tell me, when you made the decision to buy, can you tell me what made you buy this package over any other?

For the last time, it is not v4 ! ;-)

Pro: reduced functionality, clean UI

Speed is not displayed in QVGA Portrait mode, only on VGA screens

Can anyone list which TTN3 functions are missing from the rz1710 Navigation Pack please?
Is it possible to choose between quickest and shortest route?

Have a look at the TomTom Navigator 2004 North America review, which is known as the HP Navigation bundle in the UK. In particular, have a look at the what’s new and what’s missing sections. Thumbs Up

That's exactly the sort of detail I was after.
I'm planning on replacing my Medion (Aldi) package, and was after something fairly cheap with 3D maps. The function I'd really miss is the ability to select the shortest route. I find that really useful for journeys across the city. Quite often I get taken miles out of the way to join a main road, when in reality, the shortest route is probably just as quick when the main roads are clogged with traffic.

After fair amount of research on this forum I recently bought Zire 72 GPS navigation pak by PalmOne. This consists of zire 72 and Palmone branded Bluetooth receiver and windshield mount and came with Tom Tom Navigator 2004 (8 CD version).

I have upgraded it to navigator version 4.4 with September 2004 upgrade. Is this version functionally similar to navigator 2004? Only difference I could see was version 4.4 has Speed and Miles to go displayed in main navigation screen. This seems to be lost in navigator 2004. I do have customizable POI categories and Warn near POI category support.

Is there any other functionality added? If nothing is added I do not want to loose Speed and Miles to Go display. And I do not have Tungsten T5 which will get me added value with December update of navigator 2004.

Is there any other change? I could not find much about version TTN version 4.4. Is this same / similar to TTN 2004?

TomTom Navigator 2004 for the pocket pc is functionally equivalent to the GO, the Smartphones, and the Palm edition - plus/minus some small details that are related to screen size and orientation.

They all share the same rendering engine, and use the same maps.

When you say they use the same maps, can you confirm the date of the respective maps? I seem to recall TomTom use data from TeleAtlas?

I've recently returned from a trip, borrowing a Mio 168 and CoPilot v4. Can you confirm whether Co Pilot v5 and TomTom HP Navigation Pack contain the new section of the A500 running between Bartholmey & Nantwich in Cheshire?

At 200k & 100k scale, using Bartholomew Collins data, you'll see the planned road.
At 50k scale, going to TeleAtlas, it's gone...
At 25k scale, going to OS, it's back...
At 10k scale, back to TeleAtlas, it's gone...
