Hi,

Yet another slight problem.

The Navmans sound quality is rubbish. It doesnt sound good and isnt loud enough. I connected an external speaker which improved quality, but the volume is still low.

I would like to connect it to my stereo system, but it maybe difficult.

Has anyone got any other solutions?

Cheers

Are they self powered or do you have to power it via the cig lighter?

They work on their own or are amplified by an AA battery for better volume. They are very good. They come as a pair, but I just use one of them. The other one can be used as a standby. They are the ones used on cd players etc

The other thing you can do is use earphones.

I tried the speaker thingy, bought a set of sony speakers, but problem occured when i tried to wire it in (hardwire), when the navman was connected in car and the speakers, the speakers would make a loud buzzing sound, if the navman wasnt connected to the cars main all would be ok....

So still back to 1st stage...

Any ideas?

It sounds like you may have a ground loop. Without looking at the setup, it's hard to see whether this is true, and if so, how to solve it - but Googling on "ground loop" may be a start.

Someone asked me to publish how to splice the Navman Audio output into an ICE system, muting the radio/cd/tape/cellphone.

If there is enough interest I will try and publish the detail.

SO far I have done this for Vauxhall Head units, and LR Defender.

Please leave name and make of car/radio I will see if enough interest is generated.

Larkshall,

I have the Navman in a Saab 9000, the car stereo is an aftermarket pioneer head unit, it has a yellow wire for telephone mute, which is currently not connected to anything.

In my case, I would be happy if I could just mute the stereo automatically when voice directions are output.

Is this a possibility? If not, I would appreciate a publication as to how to fully connect to ICE, as i am sure others would.

Cheers

As requested from your post, I think there is a large market for a simple device which connects to the audio mute and auxillary input function of most modern ICE systems. It is beyond my electronic design skills, but I have a Saab 93 (2001) standard stereo which has an audio mute for telephone etc and would be interested in a design/instructions/device to link it to the 510.

Thanks

Joel Williams

I bought a pair of Philips 107 speakers for about £9.50. Only use one of them which is battery powered and even on the lowest volume will outdo the radio.

Hi,

I found an interesting box (FastMute) which make it possible to connect ANY PDA to your car speakers(stereo).
No special radio required.
The box has a Mute-Generator (VOX) implemented.
In the moment (5ms later) the internal car speakers are switched off and the PDA sound comes amplified (9W Sin) to your car speakers.
There is only one, 2 wire connection, from the ear phone jack to that box.
2 sec after the PDA sound has finished the speaker will be switched back (fall back) to your radio.

Add On implemented for PDA MP3 users.
Autodetect for music. If the box is detecting music the fall back time will now be changed from 2s to now 15s. So no low volume music will cause any jitter in switching.

You can find this box here
http://home.tiscali.de/fastmute/
The only problem is, that all informations are in German.
If there is some interest, I can translate the main items
