I am trying to use the Hi-303E with my X50v, but the GPS receiver seems not working most of the time. I tried many times with the beta version of the Mapopolis Navigator Version 4 as well as the GPSInfo software came with the Hi-303E. In the GPSInfo software I can see the receiver is installed on COM4:CF_CARD-Generic, but when I click “start GPS”, the LED of receiver only blinks for once and dies. The same result with Mapopolis. Actually I have succeeded for once when I software reset the PPC and got it worked with GPSInfo. However I can never make it work again… and the reset doesn’t help. Could someone give me some advice? Thanks a lot!

Have you tried the usual stuff - setting it to NMEA 4800 ?

lbendlin, thanks for reply. I have set the baud rate to 4800, but i didn't see any place to set the protocol to be NMEA. Could you please be more specific? thanks!

I use Memory Map and TomTom with a Haicom 303 on my Axim X50 with no problems. I'm not familiar with the Mapopolis software you mention but in TomTom the gps setup is ..

For TomTom 3

Haicom Gps (As the unit)

CF CARD Generic (as the driver)

The Haicom 303 unit definately works with the X50 models so all I can think is an incompatability with the software you are trying to use? Unless the unit is faulty of course??

Sorry can't be of more help!

I've never used it as I already had software which I know worked with my older Axim X5 and I've also used the stuff on my mates X3 so I didn't have any use for the Haicom thingy! If I get a chance in the near future I'll have a look for my cd and check out the Haicom utility.

Hope you get sorted!

I wouldn't use the "Haicom GPS" setting in TomTom GPS with an Evermore chipset Haicom (model name ending in E). The "Haicom GPS" setting assumes a SiRF chipset, and sends SiRF setup commands that the Evermore chipset may misinterpret.

For an Evermore chipset Haicom, I'd use NMEA 0183v2 4800.

I just got my new X50v yesterday and it came right up with Com4 using my Holux Ultra CF gps. The X50v is really a nice improvement over the X5. Side by side, the X50 is much much brighter than the X5. Also the unit is quite smaller which surprised me. The aviation software that I have comes up much faster also. Really happy with the unit. Now I have to sell the X5. It is just like new and always used a screen protector.

The only criticism I've heard of for the Dell Axim X50v is the battery life, which is rather short, particularly compared to what's arguably its nearest competitor, the HP iPAQ hx4700.

That said, the Axim is reckoned to be a solid machine, and is rather cheaper than the iPAQ.

I've never experienced "any" problems at all using the Haicom option in Tom Tom. This is the third setup using different GPS Models that I have owned and there was no noticable errors or misguidance given over the Haicom than the other two setups I've used. SO as it seems to be working great as I've been setting it I'm inclined to leave well alone (Don't fix stuff which aint broken) :D
