Hi - a simple question for someone in the know.

I installed the GB maps on my SD card in my Axim X5 (this I did via a card reader to speed up the process).

Now, to get the best performance out of my machine I was thinking of moving the maps to my CF card to see if route mapping times are quicker. I copied the maps from SD -> CF (using my multi card reader) and prefixed the SD map folder with an x hoping to hide it from tomtom. I was expecting some reconfiguration but tomtom worked fine. I can only assume it's found the maps on the CF card and is ignoring the renamed folder on the SD card.

Does someone with the knowledge know whether this is what's happening ?
How does tomtom know where the maps are ??
Does anyone with experience of the Axim X5 know if I should expect the CF to be quicker than the SD (sd does seem slow) ???

Cheers - Andrew (I've never been lost with my tomtom yet - but my wife doesn't always agree with the directions it's giving).

Actuall it finds the maps by looking at folders that end in "Map" so your prefixing may not have worked at all. You need to rename the diretory completely.

You can check the registry to see which map TTN is using

CF is generally faster and more reliable than SD

Thanks - I went as far as deleting the map folder completely with no registry changes and it works fine. And thanks for the reassurance on the CF faster /more reliable than SD info.

Don't know how to check registry entries so it's off to aximsite.com to see if there's any info. for me.
