I wish they would fix GE.
My 2597 updates maps OK but my 2599 just goes round in circles from the start flicking from 2 hours to 20 hours to go.
When I did the recent 2017.10 I ended up closing GE after about 2 hours to start again as it was still going in loops.
When I started it it said the 2599 was up to date.
Similar thing the last 2 times as well. Set it off and after it's been going a few hours just close GE. _________________ Satnav:

Hi
Yes GE was up to date. It's just a quirk I get with the 2599. When I accepted the map update it spent about half an hour rapidly flicking between 1 and 20 hours to go as it was downloading the map. Then it went to building maps, at that point the progress bar went back to zero and started again. Then it went to copying files and again the progress bar went back to zero.
It stayed on copying files for another hour till I pulled the plug when the progress bar was still only on about 6%. But it had actually completed.
Previously when I've started again it does do the job properly, this time it had finished but GE didn't think it had.
I then did the 2597 and that went through as it should have done, but, being as the map had alreasy been downloaded that stage was just seconds.
I think next time I'll do them the other way round and see what happens. _________________ Satnav:

Just done the reinstall map option and it went through in 1½ hours without issue.
I wish they would allow you to download the map and firmware somewhere else.
If you're not careful multiple downloads can easily fill up a small SSD, as I found to my cost a while back.
Info: Check C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map and see how many versions it's left behind and how much space it's eating up. Do the same with the Firmware folder.
I got almost 50Gb back of my 120Gb SSD when I moved them to my D:\ drive. _________________ Satnav:

The more folks that do the more chance Garmin will act. Note Express already has an option of where to put the maps that BaseCamp uses. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.

What HAS happened to main updates recently?
Using Garmin Express I have had problems updating my 2598 to 2017.10 - yes 2017 before we are even halfway through 2016 and probably 2015 or earlier data!
As expected the update was too big for the device and GE propedly suggested that the full map needed to go onto my SD card - but then it told me that my SD Card was "not compatible" despite the fact that it was quite happy with 2016.30. So why was it not compatible? Because GE assumes that 2016.30 will stay on my card and there is therefore not enough space for 2017.10 AS WELL!
Before map files became so large the installation software would remove the old map as an integral part of the process. Now, GE appears not to remove the suoerceded map and does not even tell you to do it manually!
Card not compatible? Not enough space on csrd would be a mire helpful message!
Or am I missing something?

Garmin's map numbering has changed recently, with 2017.10 now being the latest for both EU and NA maps, but really isn't an issue, it's similar to other numbering schemes where companies seem to jump ahead.
Express will delete the old map from sd cards, it did from mine when it updated my 2508, but only if Express put the maps there in the first place and you haven't messed with the name of the map. Often folks do that so it's more memorable but then they need to accept they must take further action to allow an update to proceed smoothly.
As for the message I agree it's not helpful but normally when I have the issue I'm told there isn't enough space, there must be something else about your particular card? _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.
