H could someone please advise me ?

My grandson has a 2 hour car journey to and from work each day and I would like to buy him either a Garmin or a Tomtom to try and help him avoid traffic jams I understand these new units can warn of traffic jams and rout you around them but here is my problem I dont know which is the best bet ???

so if any users can give me some models to look at you would make an old man happy Laughing Out Loud
regards Gerry

I have a Garmin 1490T that works fine in the south of England and on major routes. I understand the traffic feature isn't so good up north though.

What route are we talking about?

A TomTom with "LIVE" capability will have "HD Traffic".

I believe this is the most comprehensive traffic monitoring system available currently on a sat-nav, as it uses all the normal sources of traffic info PLUS the location/movement details of thousands of Vodaphone SIM cards in mobile phones and other TomToms.
AFAIK, that's a TomTom patent, so no other manufacturer has anything similar.

It also covers more roads than the simpler RDS-TMC system used on non-LIVE TomToms.

TomTom also has by far the best routing of all Sat Navs, in my opinion of course Very Happy

From what I read, they are both good systems when they work.

Unfortunately I see many reports of lost signals and poor reception. Considering aerial technology these days it amazes me that you still need a pseudo 'washing line' across the windscreen on rubber suckers to even stand a chance of getting a signal.

having tried both Garmin and tomtom id say tom-tom win hands down on traffic avoidance, routing and after sales product support. Garmin have slightly superior mapping accuracy in my area. but the differences are minor one thing you haven't mentioned is budget. A tom-tom live PND with lifetime maps start from around £150 mark(GO 825 LIVE) a built in unit starts from around £530 mark (SONY XAV601BT+SONY XA NV200TL) the navigation software on this unit is run on tom-tom software including live services and hd traffic

go 825

Garmin too do 'live' traffic if you want to spend a bit more, although personally I find the free traffic more than adequate, this ones around £125:

I'm surprised though about your comments on Garmin support as it's normally considered very good Confused

Think I did say it wasn't too good up north Smile

But hey, that's one test over a couple of days. I've never bothered with the live stuff as the normal free traffic on Garmin has always worked for me.

Having worked with TomTom's Live HD traffic and their non-live version (which is the equivalent of the Garmin version you are recommending) - in various parts of the country - I can say it's no contest. Despite the shortcomings that are regularly moaned about, the Live version is so much better that I would never go back to anything powered by RDC-TMC.

... and to answer Kremmen's comment, Live HD traffic does not require an extra aerial around the windscreen.

Thanks for the update. So it's able to receive a perfectly good signal without the need for any ugly attachments? Smile

Correct. The signal comes through the built-in SIM, Vodafone, so it is only constrained by the availability of Vodafone signal. There ARE some areas where there is no signal.
