|
|
hi all
just a bit of general advice really. a friend of mine has an ageing tomtom ONE and is going on a trip to the USA. rather than hiring a satnav there or buying maps for his out of date unit here, what is the most basic model that will give him these maps already built in. he is a light user in the UK so doesn't need an all singing and dancing unit.
also doesn't necessarily have to be tomtom but as that's what he had before thought it best to ask here.
any advice gratefully received.
thank you. |

As your friend is used to TomTom's and I'm a TT fanboy, I'm going to say stick to TT although Garmin are the US brand so they may have the edge in the USA if he wants to get to know a new machine on holiday.
If your friend is staying with friends/family or even at a friendly hotel I'd suggest he goes to an American web-site and buys a bargain SatNav from there and have it delivered to his holiday address in advance.
Amongst others, Amazon.COM have a TomTom XL 335T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator ,Lifetime Traffic Edition for $72. (c£47) +$5 delivery.
EDIT - The above machine only has N American maps installed, unless it is possible to buy and download UK/EU maps for it it's only for USA use.
EDIT, EDIT - Yes, Uk maps ($42) & EU maps ($63) can be installed if wanted. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

thanks for reply ali.
don't think that's an option as he will not be in one place too long so really needs this unit before setting out from uk. also as his present tomtom is so old its a good opportunity to get a new one for use in the uk also. |

Ok.
If it's for regular usage I'm not up to date with the newer equipment, so I'll bow out at this stage. Good luck. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

The only official offering from Tomtom including as standard European and US (plus other maps for Asia and Africa) is the GO LIVE 1005 World.
Cost is about £250 (you can recover £50 as cash back with the current promotion, so bringing the cost at around £200).
Otherwise you can buy one of the cheaper models and then add the US map, buying it as an additional map.
With the cuirrent 30% discount on maps, it should cost £25-30 (check with the specific model on the Tomtom website). |

See the current topics about REALLY cheap GO 750's from Currys.
That's a great model, but you'll need to buy a US map too. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
