Hi Guys,

after hitting some issues today using my Go720 with out of date roads I think its time to update the maps - not done this since new some 3 years ago I think.

So, as my current 2GB memory card is just about full I have ordered a new 8GB card (class 10) which should arrive in a day or 2. I have a few questions in advance of doing next steps.

Once the new memory card arrives can I just copy the contents of my current card to the new card via my Windows 7 hard drive using a usb card reader ?

Once I have the new card up and running I then need to look at updating my existing western europe maps - do TomTom offer different options or is the only option the annual subscription service ?

Thanks in advance for any advice guys.

Just stick the new card into the 720 and connect to computer. Select external memory, then go get the new map, no need to have all the system on the card. But if you feel safer that way, by all means copy everything onto it as you have described.

Options are to buy the update service or buy a brand new current map. The new map may be cheaper than the update service, (but not by very much) as your present map is so old. I bought a new big (over 2GB) Europe map, downloaded last week for £59.95.

We are at present "between maps", the next new one being due fairly soon ( a month or so? I'm sure somebody with better memory than me will offer a good guess).

New maps update (895) is due by the 15th August (give and take a few days)

Whether you need to copy everything from the old card to the new one, DOES depend on how you are running things currently....

It may be that you have all the system files, voices etc still on the internal memory and ONLY the map on the 2GB card. In which case there's no absolute need to put anything onto the new card before you start updating (but see below!)

But it might be that at some time in the past, you have copied everything onto the card and have been running the system from there.

In that case you DO need to copy everything from the old card to the new one before updating the map.

----------

Having said that, Home still has an unfortunate habit of sometimes trying to install to the internal memory, even if you selected the SD card at the beginning.

The best way to avoid that, and what I would suggest anyway, is to copy everything from your existing card to the new one (no need to copy anything from the internal memory).
Then you can check everything still works exactly as it always has done, and only THEN connect to Home, select the card as the preferred storage, and do the update to the new map.

Thanks guys for the advice - much appreciated.

I will copy the old to the new card once it arrives and then weigh up the cost of an annual subscription against a one-off purchase of the current maps.

I will also update the PGPSW speed cams on the new card as they are overdue for a refresh.

If I take an annual subscription and then let it lapse and not renew it after 12 months I take it I just get left with the map which is loaded at that point - you are not locked in forever once you go down the subcription route are you ?
