GO 720 finally bites the dust

My much loved GO720 has packed up, gets as far as start up screen and goes no further and the only way to switch of is via the reset button.
Is it worth getting repaired or what it the equivelent model available, needed for UK & European use

It is probably a file corruption. Can you get a USB connection from you computer?

JaguarV12e, yes i can but please note you are dealing with an old novice who still uses a nokia 3210 mobile phone

Go works ok in home but still not operating manually

Hopefully, this will be easy to fix......

First we need to make a backup so everything is safe if something goes wrong:

1. I suggest you make a new folder in 'My Documents' called "TomTom Backups", and then every time you make a new backup create another sub-folder inside that one, named with the model and date - something like "Go730_2010_4_28"

2. Now, connect the Go to your computer with the USB lead, and using Windows Explorer, browse to the TomTom Storage drive.
On a 720 the TomTom will show up as two new disk drives with the next spare drive identification letters, one for the internal memory and one for the SD card slot. You've probably still got everything on internal memory and that will usually be the second of the new drives.

3. With the mouse, select everything in the right-hand panel of Windows Explorer (i.e. everything on the TomTom - every file and folder),
Then right click and select 'Copy'
(Alternatively you can use the Edit menu at the top to first "select all" and then "copy")

3. Now browse back to the folder you just made on the PC, open it and right click inside it and select 'Paste'.

YOU'VE NOW MADE YOUR BACKUP.

Now go back to the TomTom's own storage memory and select all the files that are NOT inside folders (do not touch the folders themselves)

Delete them (right click/delete)

That will hopefully have got rid of the corrupted system file.

Now you should run TomTom Home 2, and select "Update my Go".
It should now install a fresh copy of the system files.

One final thing to mention is that the Go730 is getting a bit old now and it's possible the internal memory chips are starting to slowly fail (that's happened to my Go720). However, now you have your backup, if you need to, you can copy everything onto an SD card and run the whole machine from that (for many more years!). Let us know if you think you'll need to do that.

Thanks for replies. Spent 1/2 hr on phone to Tomtom this morning and everything now seems ok though at 1st they did suggest having it repaired but when i mentioned that this forum had suggested it might be a corrupted file the offer to assist on line was offered.

Have now made another backup so hopefully all will be ok.

Yes mine soldiers on, but Traffic has now failed.

On backing up via Explorer, don't forget to first adjust your PC, so it shows hidden folders.

ie

Click to open Folder Options.

Click the View tab.

Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Purchased one of those USB Traffic Receivers and glad to say traffic has been
restored on my 720T; tried alternative Jack Plug type but no change.
Must say the USB one seems really quick in finding the FM Station
Now I need to follow the instructions on fitting a new battery; any recommendations on best source for a battery with good capacity.
