I have just bought a new 750 live - pleased with some things, disappointed with others, but overall pleased. Because the 750 uses a micro sd card I asked on another thread what people would recommend using. I then remembered I had a micro card in a mobile phone so have tried using that.
I thought it would be interesting see how long it took to plan a route on internal, sd card and my old 720. These are the results using a route from Trafalgar Square (WC2N 5DP) to George Square, Glasgow (G2 1EQ) - Fastest Route - no particular date & time:
750 internal, Navcore 9.058 map Western Europe 865.3244 - 3'42"
750 Kingston micro 4gb sd card Class 4, Navcore 9.058, map Europe 2gb 865.3244 - 2'22"
720 internal, Navcore 8.3, map Western Europe 865.2345 - 1'13"
720 Transcend 8gb sd card class 6, Navcore 8.351 map Western Europe 865.3245 - 1'48"
Perhaps some of the difference between the 720 and 750 may be explained by Live traffic on the 750 but would this be relevant when 'no specific date and time' is selected?
It would be interesting to see what speeds others get for the same route for 'no specific date and time' - please post details of which device, cards, maps, navcore you have used.
Apologies if this as been done before but I have not seen it.

That's very interesting!

Similar tests have been done before but the ones I can think of recently have either been between the "normal" old models and the new Go1000/2000 models (which isn't really fair as the hardware is so different and they have pre-computed routes in the Go1000/2000), or the comparison has been between maps/models with and without IQ Routing (which slows things down considerably!).

But your tests would seem to be between fairly similar units and it's fascinating to see it presented so baldly how much slower the 750 was than the 720.
However, my results were a little different so we need to ensure we are using exactly the same conditions and timing points....

1. My timings were from moment I tapped the "Done" button to the time when the route finished being drawn on screen.

2. I used your postcodes to set the start and destination... WC2N 5DP was Trafalgar Square, but G2 1EQ was actually Anchor Lane (one street away from George Square on the latest v865 postcode files, you may want to update yours!

3. When I had selected the postcode/road I opted for "Anywhere" each time.

4. On the Go1000 I could not select "Anytime" so I selected 2nd May 00:00 am, and I couldn't select "Anywhere" so I just entered "Done" when asked for a house number.

5. The planning preferences were all set to calculate "fastest"

My results:

Go940 LIVE, (internal memory)
App: 9.058.568435.1
Map: Western_and_Central_Europe "Large" v865.3245

Time taken: 1 minute 57 seconds
------------------------------------------

XL.S LIVE IQ Routes Edition (internal memory only)
App: 9.058.568435.2
Map: Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB v840.2562

Time taken: 2 minutes, 10 seconds
------------------------------------------

Go1000 LIVE (internal memory only)
App: v10.110.632670.74
Map: 'Europe' v865.3243

Time taken: 6.7 seconds (quick isn't it!)
------------------------------------------

Go 720 (running on a Micro SD, 8GB, Class 6, Transcend)
App v7.221 (8572/071121) OS:2318 (Yes really! - there's a game I like on it!)
GPS: v1.21 Boot 5.5120
Map "Western and Central Europe_2GB v715.1710

Time taken: 21.8 seconds (No IQ routing on this model!)

Don't forget... no IQ Routing on that model. Makes a huge difference!

For those of you with IQ Routes models, try calculating the same complex route with IQ switched on and off (in Planning Preferences).

Agreed, but if IQ Routing is turned off, wouldn't the basic Time To Travel be the same?

Should be... but I don't think 'alanji' had it switched off did he?

Calculating "at no particular time might not be the same thing as switching it off completely in the preferences. More tests needed!

That's why it's so important we all state the exact settings we're using and features we have, otherwise the results can end up a bit meaningless.

Yes, once the instructions had been 'written' and the route summary appeared.

It is updated and does show Anchor Lane - I got the postcode from the Royal Mail site!!

That time for the 1000 is unbelievable!!

On my 750 internal with IQ routes disabled the time reduces from 3'42" to 1'26" One has to ask if it is it worth using IQ routes?

Posts crossed "at no particular time" is obviously not the same as switching IQ off. Perhaps "at no particular time" takes an average of IQ speeds?

It really scores highly for LONG routes to well-known places.
This is because apparently (if you can believe their press release) they got a super computer to pre-calculate millions of possible routes and somehow programmed that knowledge into the Go!

If you set it to do a short route it isn't so dramatically faster, and to give it a real test, you have to send it to somewhere well off the beaten track

540 Live, Navcore 8.371, Map UK&ROI v860.3101, internal memory

1 minute 22 (IQ routes Enabled, Anytime)
1 minute 17 (IQ routes Enabled, 2nd May 00'00)

25 seconds (IQ routes Disabled).

It is probably better to have IQ routes enabled because it should give you a faster route, even if it takes longer to calculate what the route actually is.

I notice that if I take a wrong turning at the beginning of such a big journey then it recalulates much quicker. I think it just works out the quickest way back on the original route rather the best route from where you are now.

When I had installed v9.058 i noticed that calculation times were quite a bit slower.

I presume the 550 is the same as the 750 apart from the map, so how is yours so much quicker than mine? And how is your internal quicker than sd card - from what I have read the 'experts' reckon sd card (certainly class 6) should be quicker. Did you have IQ routes enabled? Just realised you are running 9.120, maybe I will try it later.

One other point for anyone doing timings, please do not start timing until both gps location is locked and traffic is 'live', if you have it.

Correct

I've no idea why the internal memory is slightly quicker, that result surprise me as well

I wouldn't have thought a GPS lock should make any difference when planning a route A - B

TomTom via LIVE 120
App 10.111.647853.74 (o) (1030.25/2/2011), )S 629985
GPS 2.16.201.88313, Boot 534808
Map Europe v865.3243

WC2N5DP to George Square, Glasgow.

Depart 15:05 today, IQ Routing.

7.63 seconds. Very Happy

Tried again 16:22 on 06 May... 1:00.95. Initially just over 7 seconds again but this time 'Traffic on route' so it recalculated.

Personally I'm not bothered if it takes 7 secs of over a minute, as long as replanning of route whilst driving is fast, I'm happy. So far this has been the case so.... Very Happy
