....and I was reading that every few 100,000 years the earth's magnetic field flips over so N becomes S and vice-versa, and we are due a flip!

PS: I see there is an ad for digital compasses at the base of this thread Confused

And what about grid north on OSGB?

That's what the Mag Var offset value is for printed on the OS Map so you can work it out using the map, although "Self Centered" maps don't have the Mag Var applied to them Crying or Very sad - Mike
Don't foget the true north offset. I was only introducing a new and exciting north into the conversation Twisted Evil DNFTT
As a matter of interest, how did the TT compas work. Was it always 'north up' with the pointer swinging about such that if you were going west, the pointer would point in the 9 o'clock direction? If so, I can see how the confusion arises Confused

It's a TTXL for £4.06 at the bottom of mine now. About what they are worth Rolling Eyes

No problemo - I'll just get a bit of snopake and write S over the N on my compass. Very Happy

I think my One XL allows me to turn the screen upside down - so no problems either!

And every few million years it flips, we're in a decline now with a pole reversal expected in a few thousand years - You have been forewarned Laughing

I ignore the compass, and have set my 920 to show direction of travel in degrees.

"Status bar preferences--- (tick) direction--- "

It will show the direction of travel in degrees and letters. I find it easy to work out my direction from that.

If you suspend your TT from the rear-view mirror with a thick thread, it will consistently align itself with the earth's magnetic field. So no need to select compass in the status bar - problem solved!
