I have a garmin i3 with out of date maps. Garmin no longer support them and do not suply up to date maps. Is it possible to reprogramme the i3 using another make of GPS software? |

Unfortunatley I dont believe this is possible as Garmin use a proprietary operating system (not Windows or Linux).

This is the second time within the last week or so that someone with a perfectly serviceable i3 device has asked for help in updating the mapping.
From what I have heard the i3 can run the latest maps so I conclude that Garmin simply choose not to make them available on the i3, presumably in a cynical ploy to force people to purchase a new unit. I consider this to be beyond the pail for a not very old device, particularly as I do not remember it being sold with a warning that it would cease to be supported by Garmin (ever, let alone in such a short time). This is in contrast to Microsoft who do at least seem to warn that the various versions of Windows will have finite support.
In these circumstances is it not difficult to vehemently condemn those who choose to download unlicensed unlocked versions of the latest mapping to run on their i3s? |

Yes, I agree it is wrong. However having been in exactly this same situation myself with an i3, I actually abandoned the device and replaced it with a TomTom device. I just make the point that had I known what was possible beforehand, I might, in annoyance with Garmin, have been somewhat tempted.
Some of these companies, by their policies, are their own worst enemies. |
