I created a route in MapSource and then uploaded it (so I thought) to my Garmin 1390T device. However, I could not find out how the access the route I thought I had uploaded when I subsequently examined the sat nav. Could anyone advise me on how to do this please?

A quick check on the Garmin website and it would appear that the 1390 does not support routes Sad

That's quite disappointing then. Pretty pointless them supplying me with MapSource then as it seems to have very little usefulness. Strange that it doesn't have routes greyed out when uploading to the device and why does it allow me to upload a map if I cannot use it afterwards?

The Garmin dosumentation is nowehere near comprehensive enough for these extra features and they never seem to respond to technical support requests either. Perhaps I should have bought another TomTom instead. Sad

Hi Cottonsocks,

Not sure if this will work with the 1390.
I purchased a 1690 last month and had the same thing - could not find the route sent from Mapsource (in "Routes") - and there was no error message on the PC or the SatNav.

As 'Paddywack' mentions, the Garmin website shows that the 1390 unit does not do routes; frankly this is unbelievable - could be a mistake - what's the point of a SatNav if you can't have routes?
Yes, the documentation of the newer units is useless in a number of subjects.

After some playing around with my 1690, I found the following - though may be different options in yours.
First send the route from Mapsource to your unit in the usual way..
Then, on your satnav press:
a) Tools -
b) My Data -
c) Import Routes -
- here you will see listed the route/s you sent from Mapsource
d) Highlight the required route.
e) Press Import - (Calculating.... msge appears)
The route will then be 'imported' into the unit.
At the end, press the back arrow to return to the Tools screen.
Now when you go to the "Routes" option you will see it there!
I was lucky to find this myself - it is not mentioned anywhere in the documention.

Hopefully you have similar or something like the above options on your unit and it works.

If it does not, and the 1390 really cannot do routes - it will really be surprising.

Good Luck

It doesn't work with the 1390 I'm afraid. There is no import option in the "My Data" menu. I would have thought it ought to be possible to add this feature as it's only a software issue surely. Trouble is, I can't get any response from Garmin about anything. The only correspondence I have had from them is one asking me to renew my speed camera subscription from the free 30-day trial (which obviously I won't be doing because I have subscribed to pocketGPS instead).

I've finally had an e-mail reply from a Garmin representative who has confirmed that routes cannot be used if transferred to the unit with MapSource. I enquired about a possible software upgrade to allow the feature but she said it wasn't possible. That seems very odd as surely it is just a software issue, so why can some Garmins use this feature and others like mine cannot?

Because they sell some models with the feature and some without. There will be a price difference between the models and it would be unfair on those who paid for the extras if those that didn't got a free upgrade.

I did offer to pay for an upgrade, but I was told it couldn't be done, so I have listed the item for sale on e-bay and will have to purchase the 1490T if my current unit fetches a fair price.

I managed to sell my 1390T for a fair price on e-bay, so I have been able to replace it with a 1490T which does support routes created with Garmin's MapSource software. However, I have one question remaining - how to get MapSource onto a PC without having to run a map update (which takes quite a long time of course)? The Garmin rep told me that if I re-ran the map update, the software would recognise that I had previously updated the maps on my sat nav and give me the option to just install MapSource on my PC - it didn't.

When uploading the map update onto another PC I have disconnected my Nuvi after the map update process has started - I assume the map update needs to get the license off the unit. At the end there is a message saying only the PC was updated. This is still a lengthy process but saves the time it takes to transfer the new maps to the Nuvi.

Wouldn't there be a danger of corrupting the data on the sat nav though by disconnecting it during an update? I wonder why Garmin don't just make the MapSource installer available on its own?
