Mike, is there any particular benefit in this, compared to the broadcast atomic clock (in Rugby?) that keeps my alarm clock right?

The MSF 'Rugby' time reference moved to Anthorn in Cumbria in April 2007.
There are a few reasons why GPS might be preferred as a time reference. MSF goes off-air for maintenance a few times a year, for periods up to two days. Although MSF based clocks have an internal quartz reference, a pair of clocks will drift separately during an outage and not be locked together. The difference may be very small but enough for a smart lawyer to get a case thrown out.
Also the frequency of MSF (60kHz) is prone to interference from electrical equipment and vehicle ignitions, so not ideal for reception next to a road.

Even so, having coordinates does not mean you know the length of the road in between them and I would hope the Home Office still requires the distance to be measured rather than take it off a teleatlas map!!
With a (reputed) 10% +2MPH allowed, the distance only has to be better than 10% and I,m sure that a teleatlas map is more accurate than that. Surely they are not more than 176 yards out over a mile?????? Shocked

Using GPS to measure the distance between two cameras would only be valid on a perfectly straight road. Any bend would distort this.

That's why you would have to use a map or some other distance measuring device Very Happy
