I probably misunderstand how the database works but do I not need to occasionally delete all cameras before installing a new set otherwise the old defunct ones will remain on my tomtom?

Thanks

Jon

You do not need to delete the old cameras when updating them. Just overwrite them and that is enough Smile

Thanks, but does that also remove cameras that no longer exist?

Yes. The database files contain all the active cameras, and therefore, when a camera is deleted from the database, it is also removed from the database that you download.

but if I then extract the database to my tomtom 920t how are unused camera files on the tomtom itself removed? I understand how new and altered will be added or overwritten but not clear on how redundant cameras are dealt with.

Thanks for you patience.

he OV2 file you extract and copy to your TT contains all the cameras. This overwrites the existing fie of the same name. Since TTs do not do any other reprocessing of the data before it is used (eg it reads the data direct from the OV2 as it is required on the screen), over-writing the file with the new version removes all the cameras in the old file and replaces them with those in the new version.

Hi Jon,

Don’t extract the database, copy the unzipped .OV2 files to the map folder on your TomTom, where they will overwrite the older versions of the same .OV2 files.

If you use the “Speed Zone Complete” database you will have 30 database files, with a name format of:

pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2

The above file relates to fixed (Gatso, Truvelo, Monitron, etc) cameras that are registered as being in a 30 mph zone, in the UK. When fixed camera sites are added, removed, or have their position changed, it doesn’t matter because the next update will have exactly the same name, but the contents of the file will be different.

Regards,

each camera TYPE has it's own file. so the issue you mentioned HAS happened recently when we stopped creating the TEMP file (all temp cameras are now in their respective files and prefixed with a 't') - we issued a news item as well as mentioning elsewhere about removing the temp file to stop spurious warnings.

so you weren't THAT wrong! Laughing Out Loud

Sorry..but I'm confused now. Do I extract or do I copy? I've got loads of 40mph warnings (on M56 for example) from long gone road works which don't go away!

assuming you are using a tomtom (check instructions if you aren't), either extract the files directly to the relevant map folder on the device or extract to somewhere on your PC and then copy them over to the map folder on your device. This will replace the old files.

The download from this site is an archived zip file.

You need to EXTRACT the files from the zip file.
If you're cleverer then me, you CAN do this so the resulting files go directly onto the SatNav.
Normally though, it's easier to let the PC extract them to the same place as you stored the zip file.

You then COPY the resulting files onto the SatNav.

Hope that makes it clearer.

That sounds like you haven't deleted the old "Temp" category file (which isn't used any more)
If you have a file called "pocketgps_uk_temp.ov2" - DELETE it, as the cameras from that file are now included in the other files.

To check your list of POI files (in your named map's folder)....
Connect to PC
If you use a TomTom, CLOSE TomTom Home if it starts up
Open Windows Explorer/My Computer
Again, assuming you use a TomTom, find the TomTom - it will be showing as a Removable Drive or Mass storage device with a new drive letter.
Browse to the named map folder (Western Europe, UK and IE or whatever)
Check for files with an .ov2 extension (if you can't see them, enable the correct view in Tools/Folder Options/View tab and UN-tick "Hide extensions for known file types)

Whatever version of the download you opted for, they should all start with "pocketgps_uk_"

Assuming you have deleted the "Temp" file above, if you use the "speed zoned" version, you should now have:

pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_var.ov2
(8)
pocketgps_uk_mobile_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba.ov2
(7)
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile_tba.ov2
(7)
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
(1)
pocketgps_uk_specs_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_tba.ov2
(7)
=30 in total

If you use the "Consolidated by type" version, its:

pocketgps_uk_gatso.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile.ov2
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs.ov2
=5 in total

or in the "Single file" (a bit of a mis-nomer as there are now two files!):
pocketgps_uk_pmobile.ov2
pocketgps_uk_sc.ov2
=2 in total

I've only listed the .ov2 files here, there will also be a .bmp icon file with the same name for each, so you can also delete the "pocketgps_uk_temp.bmp" file if you wish, as it's no longer needed.
