I'm puzzled by your report. I went for a walk today and checked the A10's .gpx file when I got back. I contained 9914 points! The device seemed to be working fine. [Edit - my .map file had about 450 points. It was about 7.5 miles.]

What are you downloading the data from? Route planner seems to fail on a far smaller number of points so I assume it is not that.

Is this the all tracks .gpx or the raw.gpx? These files seem to have a lot more waypoints then neccessary, and by the looks of the ones on my A10, it records every second of your walk. The .map files are much smaller and when you export them they are just as small and pretty acurate.

I managed to import a route with 697 points on to the Route Planner and it seems to hold up, it does get slow after a while, which I hope they will sort out soon. But I can't see a use of routes longer then this, surely they should be done in multiple legs, rather then one big route?

Waypoints are the 'locations' you set when planning a walk/route etc. The points in the Raw data information after a walk is a log of your progress (usually referred to as a track log). Usually you have many less waypoints in a route, generally to indicate turning points or other important places on the route. The tracklog is generally used post walk to analyse the route you took, provide a record of the walk and statistics (total ascent/time/distance etc.)

Satmap have tried to merge the two uses by allowing the reduction of the tracklog to make a 'route'. In my opinion it still produces way too many waypoints to be useful - you would constantly be checking the Active 10 rather than enjoying the walk (or whatever).

For normal walking/cycling you are generally constrained by the paths/roads/byway as to the actual route you follow. Use waypoints to mark path choices at junctions. A simple way to do this is to place a waypoint a short distance BEFORE the path junction and then place another a short way up the path that you want to take. Then, when you get to the path junction, you can use the direction to next waypoint function to indicate the correct path to take.

For situations where you aren't constrained (e.g. on water, right-to-roam areas) all you need are waypoints to give you markers as to your progress and course changes.
